Anybody who commits an act of theft of any kind belongs in jail.
Similarly, anyone who takes the law into his own hands even after being cautioned by law enforcement not to — and then shoots anyone, including burglars, in the back, “for sport,” unprovoked or just because he thinks he can get away with it (with the aid of public sentiment) — is a cold-blooded murderer.
That’s exactly what Joe Horn did - shoot unarmed burglars, who happened to be “Black Hispanic” immigrants, in the back, allegedly after a break-and-enter at his neighbor’s house, in Pasadena, Texas — The “Hanging” State.
Had Joe Horn witnessed them assaulting his neighbor, the use of deadly force would have been warranted…but even then, since the burglars were on their way out of the property, a warning shot followed by a “citizens arrest” would have been most appropriate under these circumstances, for after all, the police were on the way, and had already cautioned him numerous times to stay put!
A fellow author, Mr. Pantagruel looks at this incident in a simple yet very insightful manner:
What if……
A man sees 2 guys leaving the neighbors house with what looks like a TV, and a big box of stuff. The man calls 9-11, and even against the warnings of the 9-11 operator, goes out and shoots the 2 guys dead! When the police show up, they arrest the man for murder! Those ‘2 guys’ were just friends of the neighbor coming to get stuff that they had been storing there. OR…. What if the man misses, and kills a little kid?
The whole thing is a can of worms! That’s why we have highly trained police officers to respond to the needs of the community. We don’t need trigger happy bigots with a third grade education shooting at anybody they want! The only opportunity that Mr. Horn stumbled onto, is to go to prison for murder!
The audio below indicates that Joe Horn never bothered to issue a “Stop Thief” warning to the two burglars, but marched out of his house intent on killing the two with pre-meditation.

Here’s an excerpt from the transcript of Joe Horn’s 911 call:
Horn: He’s coming out the window right now, I gotta go, buddy. I’m sorry, but he’s coming out the window.
Dispatcher: Don’t, don’t — don’t go out the door. Mr. Horn? Mr. Horn?
Horn: They just stole something. I’m going after them, I’m sorry.
Dispatcher: Don’t go outside.
Horn: I ain’t letting them get away with this s–t. They stole something. They got a bag of something.
Dispatcher: Don’t go outside the house.
Horn: I’m doing this.
Dispatcher: Mr. Horn, do not go outside the house.
Horn: I’m sorry. This ain’t right, buddy.
Dispatcher: You’re going to get yourself shot if you go outside that house with a gun, I don’t care what you think.
Horn: You want to make a bet?
Dispatcher: OK? Stay in the house.
Horn: They’re getting away!
Dispatcher: That’s all right. Property’s not worth killing someone over, OK?
Horn: [curses]
Dispatcher: Don’t go out the house. Don’t be shooting nobody. I know you’re pissed and you’re frustrated, but don’t do it.
Horn: They got a bag of loot.
Dispatcher: OK. How big is the bag … which way are they going?
Horn: I’m going outside. I’ll find out.
Dispatcher: I don’t want you going outside, Mr. Horn.
Horn: Well, here it goes, buddy. You hear the shotgun clicking and I’m going.
Dispatcher: Don’t go outside.
Horn: [yelling] Move, you’re dead!
[Sound of shots being fired]
Then Horn is back on the phone:
“Get the law over here quick. I’ve now, get, one of them’s in the front yard over there, he’s down, he almost run down the street. I had no choice. They came in the front yard with me, man, I had no choice! … Get somebody over here quick, man.”
Dispatcher: “Mister Horn, are you out there right now?”
Horn: “No, I am inside the house, I went back in the house. Man, they come right in my yard, I didn’t know what the — they was gonna do, I shot ‘em, OK?”
Dispatcher: “Did you shoot somebody?
Horn: “Yes, I did, the cops are here right now.”
Dispatcher: “Where are you right now?”
Horn: “I’m inside the house. …”
Dispatcher: “Mister Horn, put that gun down before you shoot an officer of mine. I’ve got several officers out there without uniforms on.”
Horn: “I am in the front yard right now. I am …”
Dispatcher: “Put that gun down! There’s officers out there without uniforms on. Do not shoot anybody else, do you understand me? I’ve got police out there…”
Horn: “I understand, I understand. I am out in the front yard waving my hand right now.”
Dispatcher: “You don’t have a gun with you, do you?
Horn: “No, no, no.”
Dispatcher: “You see a uniformed officer? Now lay down on the ground and don’t do nothing else.”
Yelling is heard.
Dispatcher: “Lay down on the ground, Mister Horn. Do what the officers tell you to do right now.”
Joe Horn took Texas justice into his own hands and committed pre-meditated murder, and he must be charged and prosecuted.
Even in Texas, the “Hanging” state, burglary is not punishable by “death by shotgun — in the back.”
That the two immigrants are “illegal” is irrelevant, unless it is okay to shoot anyone in the back because they are “illegal.”
A human life is not “illegal” until it takes away another life with pre-meditation, therefore Joe Horn has rendererd himself “illegal” and should be put to death or imprisoned for life.
I guess in Texas, if you are an “illegal immigrant,” your life is illegal too!, and Texas, a ReTHUGlican state has laws which might just help this vigilante moron escape justice.
Compare Horn’s incident to that a John White, 54, a black man who shot a white boy in Brooklyn, New York, and who is being tried for manslaughter — For defending his son against what he saw as a racist white mob.
….or the case of two Border Patrol agents who attacked an unarmed border-crosser who was trying to surrender, shot at him 15 times and wounded him as he fled, then tampered with the crime scene and failed to report the shooting as required to their supervisors.
The despicable “anti-immigrant Populist Propagandist,” CNN’s and America’s modern day Dr. Joseph Goebbels, who’s latest book I hereby christen: “Independents Day - Awakening the American ‘Racist’ Spirit,” describes these two as “outstanding Border Patrol agents,” — two “thugs in uniform” who were sentenced to terms of 11 and 12 years by a federal jury of their peers last October.
Lou Dobbs, the CNN anchor obsessed with undocumented immigration, parrots incessantly, almost everyday about these two murderers — in order to promote his racist agenda against immigrants. He has featured their case at least 131 times, including a one-hour special, according to the September issue of Texas Monthly. They’ve been glorified by anti-immigration websites and lionized by politicians like U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.). Even the American Freedom Riders, a nativist biker gang, calls them “persecuted.”
All because the man shot by Ignacio “Nacho” Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean turned out to be a drug smuggler (although Ramos and Compean didn’t know that when they opened fire on Feb. 17, 2005).
Numerous cases of vigilantism and racist attacks on immigrants go un-reported in the United States. Families of immigrants (non-whites) are being petrol bombed, threatened and killed by racist thugs. Immigrants(legal and “illegal”) are suffering, and are terrified all over this land.
Nooses are appearing everywhere.
If Joe Horn goes unpunished…and as the Republican “Who Is The Meanest Anti-Immigrant” Presidential Candidate chest-thumping continues to escalate, much more worse things are likely to happen,… most of which will go un-reported. .
As expected, Nazi Propagandist Lou Dobbs, last Thursday night, thrust himself in favor of Joe Horn — essentially, he played these two snippets of the 911 call:

Horn: [yelling] Move, you’re dead!

…then proceeded to “analyze” the shooting together with an obviously biased white Texas police officer — strenuously trying to twist the case in favor of Mr. Horn.
This stupid “hillbilly” must be punished to set an example to the rest who might want to do the same.
Even in the wildest of the “Wild-West,” one never shot a thief in the back. A warning to “Drop It” was always given, followed by a “Fair” fight, if necessary — shooting someone(only if you were white) in the back without provocation, with malicious pre-meditation and “just because you could do it” — was considered cold-blooded murder, and it still is today!
I really doubt if Mr. Horn would have shot burglars if they had been white — for in these United States, per Leonard Pitts (columnist for The Miami Herald) — “The idea that some of us are less than the rest of us, that some are roaches, vermin, viruses, parasites, infestations, beasts or sub-humans to whom no one owes no duty of human decency or commiseration, didn’t start with the Nazis. It is as old as Cain, and as widespread as the common cold.”
The decent thing that Mr. Horn should have done, was to let the police do their job, and not be judge, jury and executioner all at once.
Joe Horn is a despicable vigilante, a killer!,…emboldened by the vicious and uncouth “pandering” of Republican Presidential candidates to the racially intolerant one third of America.

In your article you say that Joe Horn is a vigilante emboldened by the on-going “racist anti-immigrant” rhetoric. I cannot agree.
The desire of the American people to secure their borders is a security and economic issue, not a racial one.
In these days we often hear of crimes committed in full view of others and ask “Why didn’t someone do something?”. Well, Joe Horn did do something about the illegals who were ransacking his neighbor’s home. I believe that he did the right thing by standing up to them rather than cowering in his home as our PC elected officials would have had him do.
We are disappointed that the police did not respond quickly with lights and sirens so that Joe Horn would not have been forced into the situation he found himself in. I applaud Mr. Horn for having the courage to defend his neighborhood.
Some thoughts regarding Joe Horn - Pasadena, Tx shooting:
1. Joe Horn first called the police and waited for their arrival. Not the action of someone bent on murder.
2. Joe Horn only acted after it became clear that the BURGLARS were about to leave with stolen property prior to the arrival of the Police. The act of a good man looking out for his neighbor.
3. When confronting the burglars, the burglars chose to come after Mr. Horn rather than surrender. The action of 2 desperate criminals. One of them was armed with a crow bar.
4. Mr. Horn, then shot the 2 Burglars rather than become involved in a 2 on 1 hand to hand confrontation. An act of survival.
About Texas law: A citizen is entitled to use deadly force to defend the property of a third party provided he reasonably believes that he has a moral or legal obligation to do so. Mr. Horn had told his neighbor that he would look after their house while they were out of town.

Learn Texas Law before making your opinion, Joe did nothing against the law. The only people who broke the law were the burglars and every person in Texas can do what Joe did. You obviously failed to do any research prior to writing your article. Your source of information is apparently the master racist himself Quanell X. Had you done even the smallest amount of research you would know that a warning shot is not required in any state in the US, even good ol liberal California. Texas state law permits the use of deadly force to the protect the property of third person under certain circumstances. Rather or no those elements were met will be for the grand jury to decide, not the liberal un-informed ignorant media, especially those from California.
Mr. Horn’s actions regardless of right or wrong which the judicial system will decide are reflective of the attitude of many Texans, We are sick and tired of being crime victms. We are tired of those that are to damn lazy to work taking what we work for. Like a sign at my house says, there is nothing in here worth dying for, but everything in here is worth killing you for.
Next time you write something get off your lazy tail and do the research first.

Dear Mr. Opiko,
I read your article about Joe Horn and felt compelled to send you a note expressing some of my thoughts on the matter. I’d like to start by saying that I agree with you that he should not have left his house, he should not have shot those young men, and he should be punished. Those men should have been punished for their crimes, including being here illegally, but certainly not by being shot.
What I disagree with is your drawing a parallel to John White’s case, and also to the Border Patrol case. Maybe in Mr. Horn’s mind this was about race, and maybe it wasn’t. The only one who really knows that is Mr. Horn. We can suspect it is all we want, but we don’t know. I don’t know what was in Mr. White’s mind when he shot that young man either. Maybe he had preconceived notions about white boys. I don’t know. The point is that unless you know these men personally, neither do you, but in your article you lay that mantel on them - and unfairly. If a white man shoots a black man, it’s racist. If a black man shoots a white man, it’s automatically self defense. This to me is a very racist assumption on your part.
In the case of the two border patrol agents, you state that they shot him while he was trying to surrender, and then you state that they wounded him as he fled. If he was fleeing, he could not have been trying to surrender. Additionally, the doctor who removed the bullet confirmed that the entry was into the side of his buttocks, indicating that he had turned as the agents have stated he did. In any case, they were doing the job that they were employed to do. That situation has little if any basis for comparison to Mr. Horn’s situation.
What really bothers me when I read articles like yours is that whether it really was about race or not, people tend to want to make it about race. Yes there is racism in this country, within all of the different cultures. But the more we pull the race card, the worse the racism gets. Should we ignore it and hope it goes away? No. Racism should not be tolerated. However, responsible reporting goes a long way to calming the already flaring tempers.
