“Two separate probes have rebutted allegations that US soldiers burnt a copy of the Koran on a raid in Afghanistan last week, Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s office said.
The US military had already rejected claims by villagers in the eastern province of Kunar that its soldiers burnt a copy of the Muslim holy book on October 13, but said after locals protested that it would investigate.”
Hundreds of angry villagers demonstrated for hours on Saturday after the allegations about the Korean, burnt pages of which were shown to reporters. They later met with US soldiers and demanded an apology.” — Quote from AFP
An investigation by the American government to determine if US soldiers committed an atrocity against villagers would be prudent, but why are we wasting taxpayer’s money on such a foolish inquiry?
Why are we shedding American blood to protect a population that cries holy murder over an alleged desecration of the Koran, but remains mute when suicide bombers kill our soldiers?
We have decimated the Taliban in Afghanistan, we should declare victory and bring our troops home. It shouldn’t be our concern if our exit leads to Islamists regaining control of Afghanistan.
I am disappointed at the Democratic candidates for president who agree that we should bring our troops home from Iraq, but insist that an American military presence is needed in Afghanistan. We don’t belong in Iraq nor Afghanistan; we will never turn those Muslim countries into Western style democracies.
It’s time for the peace movement to be as outraged by our military intervention in Afghanistan as it is with our military misadventures in Iraq.
It is not up to America to determine who should be in power in Iraq and Afghanistan; we should get the hell of those countries as soon as possible.
As an American who believes in self-determination for all peoples, I urge our government to bring our soldiers home for Iraq AND Afghanistan immediately.
