Jerry Falwell Is Gone, But James Dobson Still Preaching Intolerance

Posted on 18 May 2007                                                                                                             Bookmark and Share

Jerry Falwell was the most prominent leader of the religious right; a movement with a very narrow moral focus. Falwell ignored the plight of the poor and disenfranchised, and focused his fury on homosexuals, pagans, liberals and women libbers.

With his death the fundamentalist movement is one step closer to obscurity, but there are still other evangelicals of his ilk preaching intolerance and homophobia.

Case in point: Focus on the Family founder, James Dobson, is still preaching his message of hatred and bigotry.

From the Associated Press:

“A prominent Christian leader said Thursday that “my conscience and my moral convictions” prevent him from voting for Rudy Giuliani should he win the Republican nomination.

In a blistering online column, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson wrote that, should the former New York mayor become the nominee, ‘I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran – or if worse comes to worst – not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life.’”

Dobson can’t tolerate Giuliani’s pro-choice and pro-gay rights positions. Evangelicals of the Falwell and Dobson variety consider anyone who believes in choice and gay rights a child of the devil. Thank goodness that these religious dinosaurs are quickly losing their influence — even in their own congregations.

From the Associated Press:

“Dobson called Giuliani an “unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand” and criticized him for signing a bill in 1997 creating domestic-partnership benefits in New York City.

He said there were other ‘moral concerns’ with Giuliani, including that he’s on his third marriage to ‘his mistress’ from his second marriage and ‘appears not to have remorse for cheating on his wife.’”

Dobson has no trouble gushing over the thrice-married Newt Gingrich, but he goes apoplectic over Giuliani’s personal life. How the hell does Dobson know if Giuliani has remorse for his personal transgressions?

I don’t wish anyone evil, but I certainly won’t mourn when Dobson joins Falwell in death.
