The Supreme Court upheld the suspension of an Alaska high school senior for raising a banner that read “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” at a school-sanctioned event outside campus.
The High Court said students can be punished for statements that an administrator reasonably interprets as promoting illegal drug use.
Any reasonable person would have interpreted the kid’s banner as a sign of fun and irreverence; only a knucklehead would see it as a message promoting the use of marijuana.
From the Associated Press:
“Joseph Frederick said his banner was a nonsensical message that he first saw on a snowboard. He intended it to proclaim his right to say anything at all.”
I applaud Joseph for taking his case all the way to the Supreme Court. A student is not a second-class citizen; certainly Joseph should have the right to speak his mind freely when he’s outside of the school.
To insist that “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” is a pro-weed declaration is as ludicrous as arguing that it’s a affirmation of the deity of Jesus Christ.
Every day our civil rights are being eroded and most Americans are too preoccupied with the shenanigans of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears to notice.
Demand that Congress overturn the Patriot Act; write a letter to the editor blasting this insane Supreme Court ruling; don’t let the government strip us of all our rights.
This Supreme Court decision really angers me; where’s my bong? And yes that’s a drug reference, at least Internet pundits are still free to exercise their freedom of speech.
