All religions, without exception, require that its disciples disregard common sense and the law of physics, and swallow myths and superstitions. Jesus Christ walking on water, Moses parting the Red Sea, or the Prophet Mohammad ascending to heaven: It’s all an assault on reason and intelligence.
When I hear a political candidate describe the tenets of his faith, I find it as awkward as a co-worker describing his latest sexual conquest. Religious talk is for the church, and sex talk is for the bedroom.
In the 2008 presidential campaign most of the leading candidates, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have gone into too much detail describing their religious faith.
Hillary Clinton’s surrogates have hinted that Barack Obama is a Muslim — he’s been forced to go to great lengths to identify himself as a Christian.
Obama was quoted in “Christianity Today”:
“I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful. I didn’t ‘fall out in church’ as they say, but there was a very strong awakening in me of the importance of these issues in my life. I didn’t want to walk alone on this journey. Accepting Jesus Christ in my life has been a powerful guide for my conduct and my values and my ideals.”
My response: As the kids say, “TMI” (Too Much Information)
Hillary Clinton in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network:
“Hillary Clinton: I believe in the father, son, and Holy Spirit, and I have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit on many occasions in my years on this earth.
CBN Reporter: Can I ask you theologically, do you believe that the resurrection of Jesus actually happened, that it actually historically did happen?
Hillary: Yes, I do.”
My response: TMI
Anything a presidential candidate says is open to analysis and criticism; if a politician doesn’t want his faith ridiculed he should keep it between himself and his God.
I don’t care if Hillary believes in the Holy Ghost or Casper the Friendly Ghost; I want to know about her politics and not her religion. If Hillary has felt the presence of the Holy Ghost, it’s because he’s been smiting her for her unholy attacks on Barack Obama.
I intend no disrespect to Jesus, but enough about him and the Holy Ghost. Let’s get the debate back on track and discuss NAFTA, health care, immigration and the Iraq war.
