NO TO SB 1069! Arizonans To Run Over Hundred Miles For Equity and Justice

This is an SOS from those of us who live in Arizona… Please post and forward. The legislature here is giving the Deep South a good name.

There are some 20 anti-immigrant bills being rushed through the legislature. Additionally, the same forces are attempting to ban the teaching of Ethnic Studies in Arizona’s public K-12 system. Those of us fighting to defend Ethnic Studies feel so strongly about these efforts that we are walking/running through 120 degree heat from Tucson to Phoenix to highlight our concerns. It is a literal return to the dark ages with the creation of forbidden curriculums. We all understand that in the climate we are living in, this may soon spread to universities and that this may occur nationally. Here, we are making a defense so that won’t be necessary.

Please see letter below for support. Also, see attached letter as there is an opportunity to also donate money for this effort.

Any questions, please write to or call the numbers/addresses below.

Colegas / Comunidad,

Any donations or help with the walk / run from Tucson to Phoenix in the form of water, gatorade, food would be greatly appreciated. Please see press release below!

Tucson, Arizona – The Arizona Community Coalition to Promote Ethnic Studies, a collaborative effort comprised of various multi-ethnic groups from throughout the State have organized a Walk / Run from TUSD Headquarters to the Arizona State Capitol in opposition to the proposed Anti- Ethnic Studies legislation, SB 1069. This group’s mission is two-fold: to bring about awareness and shed light on the proposed legislation’s aim to ban and exclude the history, culture, and contributions of people of color and to educate the community at large about Ethnic Studies programs.

Historically, running in Indigenous cultures has been a way of not only delivering messages, but of prayer, reflection, revitalization, hope, and sacrifice for the greater good of the community. Join us in a show of strength and support as we send a message across our nation that nourishing our cultures and uniqueness leads to individual and collective success!

Ethnic Studies programs have demonstrated to be highly effective in:

reducing the disparate drop-out rates for students of color, increasing their positive sense of cultural identity, increasing their graduation rates, increasing their college/university going-rates, and increasing their passing rates for AIMS, whereby they have continued to out perform their counter parts who have not taken Ethnic Studies courses. SB 1069 is an attempt to prevent the progress that has been made in developing educated, healthy, and informed young people.

The “Equity and Justice” Walk/Run will begin on Saturday Jun 27th at 5:00 a.m. at TUSD headquarters (1010 E. 10th Street, Tucson, AZ) to Joaquin Murrieta Park on Silverbell Road. The runners will depart to Phoenix from there. On Sunday June 28th, there will be a vigil at 8:00 p.m. to receive the runners at Tonatierra’s Nahuacalli, 802 N. 7th Street, Phoenix, Arizona, followed by a press conference Monday morning June 29th at 10:00a.m. After the press conference, a march to the Arizona State Capitol in support of Ethnic Studies will take place (approximately 12:00 noon).

For contributions or questions please contact: Jesus Ruiz, Marisol Flores-Aguirre, or Sean Arce.
