This brutal bloody slaughter (See Pics/Video Below) took place in the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark. To initiate into adulthood it is mandatory to kill a dolphin or a whale.
The Faroe Islands, sometimes Faeroe Islands, Faroe(s), or Faeroes are an island group situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Scotland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands are a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark proper and Greenland. [ READ MORE ]

This atrocious slaughter has been practiced since at least the 10th century. Nearly 1,000 are killed annually in the “grindadráp” — whale hunt — typically occurring during summer months.

Is there not a better way to prove that one is a man? Instead of killing helpless sea animals, why dont they go back to the days of Beaveheart and throw big heavy stones, and if they feel the need to inflict pain on someone or something, try throwing them at each other. Man will never go extinct, unless by his own stupidity. Let the innocent creatures of the earth have a chance, to say the least.

I have just been sent an e-mail regarding this and am totally appalled…What is wrong with these people…I have seen pictures of atrocities from all over the world but few as barbaric and pointless as this…this does not prove they are men, it proves they are cowards…It is about time the world became aware of this. We also have to remember that this is just one example…Man, when hungry, had little choice but to go hunting, it was not a sport, it was a necessity…now we have technology, we can do anything in the virtual world, yet this sort of thing still goes on…i feel ashamed to be part of the human race…SOMEONE NEEDS TO AIR THIS ON GLOBAL NEWS TELEVISION…
WAKE UP DENMARK…THE ONLY THING YOU NEED TO PROVE YOU ARE A MAN IS TO LOVE…

PLEASE READ HERE – Faroese are not Danes!!!
Think twice before you state something you’re not completely sure about!!!
Faroe Island is a independent island, that have their own parliament, culture, currency and language. It is not near Denmark and you CANNOT call these people Danes! Faroe Island is like Greenland, formally under the Danish queen but is totally independent!!!! Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroe_Islands!
It is brutal what is happening, I agree… But just to make it clear that this is not Danes doing this terrible stuf!!!
December 6th, 2009 at 2:40 am
JanneE:
The WikiPedia link you provided leads to this: “….The Faroe Islands are a part of the Kingdom of Denmark.” — just like Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. Furthermore, the WikiPedia article states that Denmark has control over certain aspects of “Faroean Life.”
Technically, they are Danish ….just like the citizens of Guam are American.
Your argument is lame!
FYI — Animal brutality is not limited to the Danes — the Chinese are equally brutal: Check Here: http://www.politicalarticles.net/blog/2009/11/28/animals-skinned-alive-inside-the-brutal-chinese-fur-trade/

I’m Dane, so I guess I have a little more insight of how things are conducted.
Yes, certain parts of the republic Faroe Islands… Denmark cannot control the culture at the location, when it is so far away from where Denmark is located. I know plenty of faroneses, and there is a huge different between the mindset of those and danes. I do not say that it is impossible to prevent these things going on, but it is a independent republic.
State what ever you want, if it is a lame arguement or not. This is just a prove of people believing all stuff from comning from the media.
I Denmark, much US people are preceived as dummies regarding geography, but I know that is not true because i have been living in the us for months now and know you cannot generalize these area.
I’m just try to provide another angle of the terrible animal situation and that it is necessary to be critical sometimes. I Denmark, this could not have happened without getting people going through ruling….

There are a lot of dummies in the US alright, but NOT this one. Some Nigerian denied in my face that they don’t abuse Hyenas LOL!
Regarding the link you provided — it’s no excuse for the brutality by which the whales are being butchered. Most of us do eat meat, but we shoot the animal into quick and painless death — not harpoon it medievally like we see in the pictures; equivalent to what the Chinese are doing here.
Whichever way Denmark is associated with Faroe Islands — they should put a stop to this barbarism.

these images makes me sick…this is so terrible. i disagree with the idea of killing whales or other animals as proof of becoming a man. These must be stop! traditions don’t make a man! i don’t remember seeing or hearing this on CNN. what is PETA doing? i don’t care if this is a tradition from an independent island elsewhere. we live in one world, we are connected in this life and everything we do has an effect to the rest and everything sorrounding us.
January 11th, 2010 at 9:46 am
I agree with Sam, we all share this world. I think that what these people are doing will be detrimental in terms of whale and dolphin population worldwide, and must be stopped. At this rate, between these islands and Japan, this \tradition\ will soon be gone. I suggest that a new tradition be instilled, like saving the Dolphins and Whales. It takes a real man to stand up and say \this is wrong\ and make the changes necessary to ensure the survival of these most intelligent creatures and to ultimately start a new tradition. Lets hope that a child will someday soon stand up and tell the parents that they do not want to partake in killing, and it would help if a young teacher would enlighten them on the consequences of their actions as well.
January 11th, 2010 at 11:48 pm

February 26th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
This is the dumbest article i have read in a long time. The subject is very very good, but you’re pointing this in the wrong direction.
Now, FYI; Denmark does not own the Faroe Islands anymore, they gave them the rights to control their own country and to make their own laws. Denmark supports the Faroe Islands financially, but have no influence over the Faroe politics and laws. If we take Greenland, then yes, the Danish government has full control (soon to be changed), but with the Faroe Islands it’s different, they’re on their way to become a country not supported by Denmark. Take Iceland; Iceland is not supported by Denmark anymore, they went through the same period as the Faroe Islands is doing now and then they were no longer supported. Just because the Faroe Islands is A PART of Denmark, then it’s not the same as it being RUN BY Denmark. Get the point?
To the matter of the story, this is indeed gruesome and i am a part of the Danish facebook group against these killings. It is horrific what they are doing. To them it’s a tradition from old time where the Faroe people did this to have enough food to survive the winter. Now it’s just a slaughter!
But another time, get your facts right. Wikipedia is not a legit source and it does not explain about how it works between the two countries, Faroe Islands and Denmark.
February 27th, 2010 at 11:37 am
Mr. Daniel Peters, I quote you:
“Denmark supports the Faroe Islands financially, but have no influence over the Faroe politics and laws.”
What have you been drinking lately?

People, please please please boot your brains! Faroe Islands and Denmark have ties going back in time but today we cooperate only in matters of foreign policy and security. We can’t tell the Faroe Islands how to catch whales anymore than the US can. I’ve never seen whales or dolphins like this in Denmark, and I’ve certainly never even seen anyone catching them. Lol we don’t even speak the same language!
It does not matter what kind of questionable links people post or not, they don’t change the fact that this is happening in the Faroe Islands, 1400 km away from Denmark. Formally they belong to the Kingdom of Denmark, but they are autonomus and an independent nation, and if we want to change anything about it we need to put pressure on the Faroe government, not the Danish one. Denmark can’t do a thing about it. I wish we could but we can’t. It would be like asking England to change Scottish or Canadian behaviour.
Furthermore, Denmark is part of the European Union which the Faroe Islands are not. Perhaps this is why something like this can take place.
And finally, those of you in here who eat tuna; are you aware how many doplhins get caught in the net and die cutting themselves while they’re trying to break free?

Check your facts. Danes do not kill dolphins, we don’t even have any. Yes, the Faroe Islands are a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark, but it is almost entirely self-governed.
Denmark is a part of and voted for the International Whaling Commission’s ban on on commercial whaling in 1986. In this (and most other) respects the Faroe Islands are closer to Norway who object to the ban and allow commercial whaling.

A combination of culture, religion, industry and politics appears to sanction this, WHAT LOOKS TO THE REST OF THE WORLD , AS BUTCHER BEHAVIOR. Below are facts…SO, IT IS POSSIBLE TO APPEAL TO the Evangelical-Lutheran & the Christian Brethren (Plymouth Brethren) communities around the world to look into this and STOP THIS CARNAGE for their OWN God’s sake !
Religion
Religion plays an important part in Faroese culture and over 80% of the population belong to the established church, the Evangelical-Lutheran.10% of the population belong to the Christian Brethren (Plymouth Brethren).
culture: its a 10th century practice that goes on to the present day …about a 1000 innocent dolphins are slaughtered every year apparently by youth to prove their manhood! A million dolphins have been done to death in this barbaric way that Faroese society appears to not just sanction but fully participate in for the macho-ness as well as the meat !
Industry
The fishing industry is the most important source of income for the Faroes. Fish products account for over 97% of the export volume. Tourism is the second lar gest industry, followed by woollen and other manu factured pro ducts.
Form of Government
Since 1948, the Faroe Islands have been a self governing region of the King dom of Denmark. It has its own parlia ment and its own flag. It is not, however, a member of the European Union and all trade is go ver ned by special treaties.
IT IS SURPRISING THAT ON A PLANET OF 6 BILLION PEOPLE WE HAVE ONLY 400 ODD SIGNATORIES… VERY ODD , INDEED !
