Kenya’s Samuel Wanjiru, rapidly turning into the greatest marathoner in history although he is only 22 years old, broke the Chicago course record en route to an impressive victory in his first marathon in the United States.

Wanjiru, the reigning Olympic champion, took command of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in the 22nd mile and went on to win in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 41 seconds. That broke the mark of 2:05:42 set by Khalid Khannouchi, then a Moroccan, in 1999. Wanjiru nearly cost himself a course record bonus of $100,000 by waving twice before he crossed the finish line. He broke the record by just a second.
