“President Barack Obama’s choice of Sonia Sotomayor to join the U.S. Supreme Court will generate a sharp political battle in the Senate over her liberal positions but she is likely to prevail.
Sotomayor’s selection would do little to change the court’s 5-4 conservative majority as she replaces another liberal. Republicans promised to her give her respectful, rigorous scrutiny during the summer months.” Reuters
It’s imperative that the Supreme Court reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of America and with the choice of Sonia Sotomayor President Obama has made the high court more inclusive and more representative of our great nation.
If Sotomayor is confirmed by the Senate, Hispanics will finally have an advocate in the Supreme Court. This is a great day for women, Hispanics and for everyone who believes in equal rights.
Sotomayor is supremely qualified to serve on the Supreme Court — she is a moderate liberal who will be warmly embraced by Democrats, and who should be palatable to Republicans.
The Republicans’ vitriolic campaign against a comprehensive immigration plan alienated millions of Latinos. If the GOP gives Sotomayor a difficult time in her confirmation, they will succeed only in losing the Latino vote for generations to come.
Obama made an excellent choice, and I predict that Sotomayor will be easily confirmed by the Senate.
