Fear-mongering on the right behind Ground Zero mosque flap: Fear is one of our strongest emotions and can serve a valuable purpose. In life-threatening situations, our reaction to fear pumps massive amount of adrenaline into our system. And we’ve all heard the stories of people performing super-human acts to save theirs or another’s life.

But collective fear in a culture almost always ends in disaster. The fear we face today is economic and it is real. It’s the fear of those who have been laid off and face the possibility of losing everything they’ve worked for. It’s the fear of those who’s jobs are tenuous and know that they could be next. Combine this with the anger of seeing the richest among us, some of whom caused or contributed to this crises, being bailed out to go on to record profits and you have a the ingredients for civil unrest.
