Denmark’s Gruesome Festival: Mass Killing of Whales and Dolphins To Prove Adulthood (2)

Posted on 14 November 2011                                                                                                             Bookmark and Share

This brutal bloody slaughter (See Pics/Video Below) took place in the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark. To initiate into adulthood it is mandatory to kill a dolphin or a whale.

The Faroe Islands, sometimes Faeroe Islands, Faroe(s), or Faeroes are an island group situated between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Scotland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands are a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark proper and Greenland. [ READ MORE ]

Killing Wales and Dolphins in Denmark

This atrocious slaughter has been practiced since at least the 10th century. Nearly 1,000 are killed annually in the “grindadráp” — whale hunt — typically occurring during summer months.

Whatever excuses you guys are giving , we can all see you being comfortable staying in the water stained with innocent blood and killing the dolphins with big hooks  IN PUBLIC . It is like a festival .That makes me think that you guys would have no problem in killing other animals too being so used to with blood and killing. Are you guys even human? unbelievable.

  • Anonymous

we need someone with financial and contract military resources to plan an attack on the festival and terminate the individuals.  Not to be carried out with anger, but in an attempt to stop that type of individual from living on earth.  Their are multiple high ground points which could be great vantage points.  Create a semi-circle around them and the sea and then scorch the earth.  Then could use boats to exit their village out to the sea.  I’m glad to offer any help I can.

By that same reasoning we can’t eat pigs. Besides, those were laws to set the jews apart from the rest of the world. Those that aren’t common sense don’t apply to christians.

  • Bardur

If it is extinction you are worried about then you need to know that about 25 species go extinct every day without human influence. So why are you worried about the whales when there is so much else that you could “save”. The population of pretty much all whale species is growing.

  • AlohaX

FYI, if there are extinctions without human influence then that is probably because they simply cannot survive in their current situation, animals come and go. And if there are ways to save them, we save them and maybe you should do your research because the animals that you guys are hunting are protected and are subject to hunting restrictions, in our current world anyways, i seriously don’t know what era you people are from. And if its for food, for god sake, whales and dolphins are not the only ones swimming in your ocean, take the initiative to look for other resource instead of blaming the size and the capability of your island in feeding its people.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=572418509 Nathalie Pulido A

Yes, there is a background rate of extinction that has been happening since the beginning of life in this planet and it does NOT affect he balance of other species because it occurs at a normal frequency. The problem is that the rate of extinctions has increased to about 1000 faster, mostly because us, humans. This is why many scientists argue that a mass extinction is happening today. About the whales, they probably don’t need us to “save” them yet, but we would still do a lot by not threatening/endangering this species. I like your opinions, there’s something to learn from everyone’s points of view.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

This isn’t so much about saving endangered species as is about saving sentient life forms. Humans aren’t endangered either, but I would chose to save them anyway.

  • Bardur

The animals we hunt are not endangered. These restriction do not apply to the Faroe Islands. In the EU they are protected but we are not part of the EU and as far as I know we have no restrictions on our own hunting. These whales do not come under the IWC moratorium on whaling and even if they were it still wouldn’t matter because we are not part of the IWC. We do also fish and raise sheep and hunt a few birds but that’s about all the resources that exist.

  • Bardur

What I am saying is that if you are worrying about extinction then the Pilot whale is not worth your time. I’ll quote what I said to someone else:”The population has been estimated by some at 750000 and by others at 200000. Even if we take this lower estimate then an annual death of 1000 is 0.5% which is far below their population growth.”
So we are not threatening or endangering this species. In fact if anything we should kill more because these whales eat (mostly squid but also) some types of fish that we rely on. 98% of our export is fish.

  • guest
The only thing that makes this different from killing cows is that it is in open view to the public.
Completly disagree dear Emily. 2 major differences. Cows are killed by professionels who are trained to kill fast, these whales are killed by amateurs – most of them drunk. Cows are also stunned before being killed, at least in Denmark, it’s a law that all animals must be stunned before killed. These whales are fully consious and aware of the faith that awaits them and their entire family.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

With all due respect Emily, these things are not the same. None are really good, but they are bad in a difference of degree. The fallacy of every proponent here is that you say, you guys eat meat, so you can’t judge us.

Well, we can and we are.

  • Bardur

I in turn accuse you of blatant gullibility. Do you really think that today’s media tells the truth all the time? The internet is especially bad. It is the home of large scale deception. A huge portion of these articles that you refer to say the exact same thing word for word and show the same pictures and videos. They are only peoples reactions to an article they have read and therefore come out exactly the same. If you want credible information you either have to do a huge amount of internet research or you have to go to another source. In the case of whale hunting you can’t claim those articles to be true unless you come to the faroe islands and see it for yourself.

  • Bardur

First of all dogs don’t contain as much meat as a whale. Second, because dogs are pets and therefore it creates an emotional attachment. It’s sort of like how all the environmentalists can’t bear to see the “cute whales” die. If dogs did not live in homes I would not be surprised if we would eat them like the Chinese do. However, we don’t really care if the Chinese are eating dogs let alone protest about it.

  • Bardur

You are accusing Emily of something you are not entirely innocent of. It is true that we don’t know how many there are but we do know that we kill far less than the population growth so this is by no means unsustainable.

  • Svanga

Don´t project yourself like a damn ignorant, you´ll never get far. Don´t hide the fact that most other animals killed for consumption suffer way more. Why? Because of profit. They have to get fat. They have to get fat fucking fast,, so you can eat it. No problem eating meat, the problem is how it is killed around the world. This shows a humane and effective way, Faroe Islands should be a role model to kill animals as fast as possible. But you can´t see pass the pictures. You´re crying like a bitch because you´ve seen Free Willy, well, bitch please, stop being so fucking silly!

  • Bardur

They are not drunk. That is propaganda. You don’t need to be a pro to kill an animal quickly and efficiently.

  • Bardur

So because you eat cows and don’t eat whales it is fine to eat cows and wrong to eat whales? If not that way then what way should they be slaughtered? You are being quite hypocritical by telling someone who does not share your view to be silent and then trying to force your own view.

  • Bardur

They are eaten and not disposed of (other than bones and intestines etc…).

  • Bardur

so many people keep saying that they should not be eaten but no one actually gives a good reason why. The most common reasons are:
    1. Intelligence, but pigs are also intelligent.
    2. Biblically whales should not be eaten, but neither should pigs, and this rule only applies to jews.
    3. They are endangered, which in the case of pilot whales is blatantly false.
    4. It is inhumane, but it is more humane than factory farming and almost all predator-pray situations.
So far there is no indication that they should not be eaten.

  • Svanga

Yeah, maybe you know what goes on in an animals head, for obvious reasons. I´ll give you that, a cow looks stupid, just hanging out farting all day. BUT my friend, a pig on the other hand, is quite intelligent, but that doesn´t stop it from being a mass production of food. Don´t use yours and my time crying over this. This should be inspirational to people, who don´t even know where the meat comes from. At least we fucking hunt our own food, not getting served like bitches, and damn your brain needs stitches!

  • Marshallrhodesfox

I don’t think we should be waging war amongst ourselves, when we are all here to save the whales and dolphins. I believe killing any sentient lifeform is undesirable, but at a point you have to accept that that’s the way the world works. But in my moral system, the more sentient an animal is, the more the right to life it has. Killing whales and dolphins is wrong not so much because of their numbers, but because, next to humans, they have the highest encephalization quotient on the planet. They are not fish, they are not chickens, they are not cows.

What’s more, they are so full of mercury that they will lower your IQs for a generation. If you don’t buy into my moral system, fine, at least buy into the self preservation aspect.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

You are right, we should probably not be eating pigs. That is a fair point. What if I were to promise not to consume pork if you promise not to consume dolphin and whale? I really am good for it.

Even if it doesn’t bother you that the entire world thinks you are backwards, including Denmark, don’t you get the fact that you’re consuming heavy metals? Do you understand what these things do to your nervous system, your brain? Consumption of heavy metals lowers IQ’s by average of 10-15 points. Do a little research.

Your ancestors may have been able to live off whale meat, but you guys are really killing yourselves. It’s ironic.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

I’ve said numerous times, killing is always undesirable. But I believe undesirableness is proportional to the sentience of the species. Why do we believe killing bacteria is justified when saving humans? This killing of cetaceans originated a thousand years ago. Can’t you guys step back and see that this belongs in a more barbaric time? The entire rest of the Western world has. Instead of thinking that the rest of us just don’t get it, for a second, just adopt the viewpoint that the rest of the world may be right for once.

The KKK and Nazi reference was distasteful. If we can’t respect each other here, than there is no point in even communicating.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

I don’t like her comment either, but insults don’t get us anywhere. You should appreciate the consequence of heavy metals in our diets.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

Cows are not comparable to dolphins and whales or humans. Maybe eating cows is hypocritical to a degree, but one does not have to be completely without sin to oppose a much bigger sin.
Maybe I’d be criticized for opposing the Nazis. I kill cows for food, so how can I be opposed to killing in general? I cheated on a test in fourth grade. How can I be against any injustice now?I expect you guys to defend something that you’ve grown up with and is part of your culture. But can’t you see how barbaric the rest of the world sees it as? Can’t you step back a little, abandon this, and let your children view this the way we in America view slavery now?I’m not trying to insult you. If I thought you were stupid or without reason, I wouldn’t be spending my time writing this.

  • Marshallrhodesfox

I have seen the pictures myself. I don’t think they were photoshopped.

Maybe you’re right and it’s not a festival, in the sense of having fun as you slaughter the animals. I honestly can’t tell from the pictures. But almost no other places on the planet does what you’re doing. Are you so defensive that you can’t step back and absorb this? Exactly what details do I not understand that make this acceptable? No one else on the planet is doing what you are doing.

  • Bardur

We are not “good for it” because we don’t share your view but it is nice to see consistency in your view. As for the heavy metals, we are the ones who did the research that you guys are quoting (or rather one of us did the research: Pál Weihe). No one knows the research better than we do. The effect on IQ varies with the amount and age and from person to person so 10-15 points is not a good number. Also, even if you eat it all the time the effect is barely noticeable. The problem becomes noticeable in unborn babies which is why for the most part pregnant women avoid eating it.

  • Bardur

There is a difference of opinion. We think there’s an us and them situation. We are humans and everything else is inferior. To some of us this is a tiered view: us, mammals, nonmammals, insects, plants or something like that. You explained your view quite well. Both can explain why it is good or bad to eat anything.

  • Bardur

I was pointing out how his statement lacked credibility. He is basically saying “I eat cow therefore it is fine to eat cow” as if he defines right and wrong.

Nazism in theory is brilliant but fails in practice because it is abused, same with communism. What made slavery wrong in the US was that before this form of slavery slaves were usually people who could not pay a debt and offered themselves as slaves instead (it was justice) while in the US they just grabbed some people and made them slaves. So slavery in theory is not that bad either, the problem was that the Americans abused it. We live with a system that we don’t view as bad and it has not yet been abused so we see no reason to stop.
You have worded your questions slightly wrong. It should be more like this: I kill cows so how can I be opposed to killing cows? which we see as: I kill animals so how can I be opposed to killing animals? which exactly illustrates our point. The second question you can do the same thing but you also need to change to present tense and it will once again illustrate our point.

  • Bardur

You can’t tell from the pictures because the pictures are taken by people who don’t want to tell. People do this to get free food. Each participant gets several kilograms of meat an blubber and those watching are their families that are eager to get this free food. If one of your family members won the lottery you would come with them to watch them collect the money right? Also, not much happens in the Faroe Islands so it is a big event but not in the sense of a festival. I have lived abroad most of my life so I have quite literally stepped back and absorbed your viewpoint and I fully understand you viewpoint so now you need to step forward and absorb mine.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=744160716 SaMaa Al-Mansi

EXACTLYYYY… would anyone care then…. and btw…. it is already happenin.. all the conflicts and mini wars r happenin between ppl and between ppl of same country blood and religion….. i m really depressed of this felthy world

  • Bardur

I agree completely. Most people just throw insults and falsehoods. This is someone I would be far more willing to argue with. Almost everything he says is true. The only thing incorrect is the manhood part. This is done for no other purpose than food. However, the manhood test has been so widely and fiercely displayed that I would be surprised if a non Faroese believed otherwise. That is why these arguments are good. They deliver evidence and counter evidence that make the truth emerge rather than bury it like this article and many of its comments. Also, these are whales only because whale is in the name. It is part of the dolphin family so technically both are correct but as far as we are concerned unless the name is changed these will remain whales.
