Republicans are making stuff up about illegal immigrants and immigration to scare people, especially those with not that much melanin. Scaring white people for fun and profit is not only politically expedient, it’s also increasingly easy to do. Tea Party Nation, the for-profit ostensibly grassroots-y gang, which introduced America to what was written on Sarah Palin’s palm during public appearances — sent out an e-mail, directing all of their subscribers to their Web site, because, they said — the drum beat for amnesty is here.

The Tea Party Nation has created a new online forum on which they’ve asked tea partiers to post stories of illegal immigration. And not just any stories will do. Quoting from the e-mail:

“If you have been the victim of a crime by an illegal, or if your business has gone under because your competition uses illegals, or if you have lost your job to illegals, we want to know about it.”

“If you have photos and videos of illegals or their supporters doing outrageous things like burning the American flag or putting the Mexican flag above ours or showing racist posters, please share those as well.”

“We need to get the true story out about illegal immigration and we need your help to do it.”

Washington– President Obama received Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer in the Oval Office on Thursday, but the two made no progress in bridging the enormous gulf that divides them — and the country — over illegal immigration and border security.

Brewer, who recently signed the racist law requiring Arizona police to check the status of people they lawfully stop and suspect are illegal immigrants, wants more federal resources — including troops, helicopters, drones and fences — devoted to controlling her state’s border with Mexico.

She said she got no commitments from Obama other than a promise of better communication.

“I am encouraged that there is going to be much better dialogue between the federal government and the state of Arizona now,” she told reporters outside the White House.

In a nod to those seeking more enforcement, Obama last week promised to spend an additional $500 million and send 1,200 National Guard troops to the border.

The president believes, however, that enforcement should accompany a comprehensive change in immigration law. He supports the latest Democratic version of such a bill, which requires a tamper-proof Social Security card, a temporary worker program for foreigners and a path to legalization for the 11 million immigrants already here. Such steps, backers say, are designed to close down the market for undocumented labor that draws people to cross the border illegally.

Brewer and other Republicans say they can’t support immigration reform until the border is more tightly controlled.

“I want the border secured first,” she said. She noted that after the last immigration rewrite in 1996, “Amnesty was bestowed upon people but we never secured the borders.” [ READ MORE ]

Technology executives say restrictive visa and immigration limits have imperiled their ability to hire more of the world’s best engineers.

Immigrants like Mr. Mavinkurve are the lifeblood of Google and Silicon Valley, where half the engineers were born overseas, up from 10 percent in 1970. Google and other big companies say the Chinese, Indian, Russian and other immigrant technologists have transformed the industry, creating wealth and jobs.

Just over half the companies founded in Silicon Valley from the mid-1990s to the mid-2000s had founders born abroad, according to Vivek Wadhwa, an immigration scholar working at Duke and Harvard.

Giving Immigrants A Chance

The foreign-born elite dating back even further includes Andrew S. Grove, the Hungarian-born co-founder of Intel; Jerry Yang, the Chinese-born co-founder of Yahoo; Vinod Khosla of India and Andreas von Bechtolsheim of Germany, the co-founders of Sun Microsystems; and Google’s Russian-born co-founder, Sergey Brin.

Mr. Mavinkurve, a 28-year-old Indian immigrant who helped lay the foundation for Facebook while a student at Harvard, instead works out of a Google sales office in Toronto, a lone engineer among marketers.

New York Times: While acknowledging that the recession makes the political battle more difficult, President Obama plans to begin addressing the country’s immigration system this year, including looking for a path for illegal immigrants to become legal, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.

“I know this is an emotional issue; I know it’s a controversial issue,” he told an audience at a town meeting on March 18 in Costa Mesa, Calif. “I know that the people get real riled up politically about this.” But, he said, immigrants who are long-time residents but lack legal status “have to have some mechanism over time to get out of the shadows.”

Administration officials said that Mr. Obama’s plan would not add new workers to the American work force, but that it would recognize millions of illegal immigrants who have already been working here.
