Huffington Post: Preceding the president’s speech to a gathering of House Democrats, thousands of protesters descended around the Capitol to protest the passage of health care reform. The gathering quickly turned into abusive heckling, as members of Congress passing through Longworth House office building were subjected to epithets and even mild physical abuse.

A staffer for Rep. James Clyburn(D-S.C.) told reporters that Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) had been spat on by a protestor. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a hero of the civil rights movement, was called a “nigger.” And Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) was called a “faggot,” as protestors shouted at him with deliberately lisp-y screams. Politico: They came pouring in from Union Station, toting lawn chairs and smelling of sunscreen, wearing Bermuda shorts and straw hats, holding signs historical (“Mr. Obama tear down this bill“), comical (“Kiss my astroturf“) and menacing (“Down our throats in March, up yours in November!“). The bitter truth of this healthcare fiasco — is that most of the thirty million to be covered by Obama’s bill are black and brown — and some whites do not like it!

The Republican politicians are exploiting the anger and racism of a certain segment of white America, especially the tea-partiers, who would are threatened by a changing America. An America in which exclusive “White Privilege” is greatly diminished.
