First Annual Republican Uncle Tom Awards

Columnist - John Sammon. Click to view larger picture. It’s only fitting that the Republican Party, the party that either stood in the way of legislation that would give black Americans equal rights, or turned a blind eye to racist injustice, the party that never passed in 70 years one piece of progressive legislation, a party that is racist and sexist, pro-war and anti-worker, would suddenly have opportunist blacks like Herman Cain carrying its standard.

You’ve got to give credit to Cain. He recognized that a party that has opposed equality at every turn and traditionally shunned blacks for decades pretending like they didn’t exist would be a wide-open field to politically exploit.

Cain recently said that during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, whose centerpieces included the right to sit at a lunch counter with white customers or sit at the front of a bus, that he remained aloof from the movement because he was too young at the time.

Oh, if we only had more like him we could have them all back in the fields picking cotton, singing “Nobody knows, ‘da trouble I seen,” or “Ole’ Man River.”

Cain is the recipient of the first annual Republican-sponsored “Uncle Tom Token Awards.”

Remember, this is the party of Rick Perry, who has a hunting lodge somewhere in the wilds of Texas with a rock that uses the N word to identify the place, something like “Niggerhead.” His family picked that over “Coonsville” and “Jig Acres.” Every man of action, like Dick Cheney with his anemic heart and shotgun, needs a hunting lodge. Hermann Goering had one called “Carinhall,” named after a deceased wife.

I guess Hermann didn’t know any blacks or he might have renamed it “Spook City,” with a picture of a wide-eyed black eating a watermelon.

Cain is also nominated for the “Uncle Tom Best Excuse” Award for making statements that he was too young at the time of the Civil Rights Movement to participate, so he left it up to Rosa Parks, the little murdered boy in Mississippi Emmett Till, along with the three slain Civil Rights activists Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner.

In fairness to Cain, I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t say I didn’t participate in the Civil Rights Movement either. But in fairness to me, I was wrong and I was white, and I was the product of a racist household, and I’m trying to atone for it by doing columns like this.

I think although she is largely out of the picture, a “Lifetime Achievement” Award should be presented to Condoleezza Rice for her participation as an African American token during the Bush Administration, as a loyal mouthpiece who justified wars based on false weapons of mass destruction, wiretap spying in the Patriot Act, torture of prisoners in violation of the Geneva Convention and all the rest. She has consistently and without fail proved her worth as a loyal Negro stooge to Bush, even though Bush and his henchmen secretly despised her, and her value to the party as a token after former Negro stooge Colin Powell showed a spark of decency and refused to read a prepared script of lies to the public, throwing it on the floor.

And finally, what can you say about Clarence Thomas that hasn’t already been nauseated? Founder of a right-wing group associated with the Tea Party Movement, many of whose members openly despise him for the color of his skin, Thomas is among the most silent of justices on the Supreme Court, seldom venturing a comment, in other words, a “credit to his race” as racists like to say, apparently knowing his place. His lack of verbosity apparently didn’t keep him from making allegedly lewd comments to an attorney, Anita Hill.

To Clarence Thomas goes the “Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows” Award.

15 Ways I Oppress Rich, White Conservatives Like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh

By: Christopher Deis

The election of Barack Obama has been difficult for many Americans. As Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Pat Buchanan (among many others) have bravely pointed out, white men are experiencing discrimination and unfairness in ways never before imagined.

Echoing these brave voices, the Tea Parties with their efforts to “take America back,” as well as Sarah Palin’s selfless work on behalf of the downtrodden and oppressed, all hint at a deep problem in this country: As the United States becomes more diverse and white Americans no longer a majority (frighteningly reduced to only a plurality by 2050), it is increasingly clear that we are indeed two Americas, separate, hostile and unequal. In total, Obama’s efforts to broaden the big tent of politics have been very upsetting to the natural order of things.

About two weeks ago Barack Obama released a video in which he rallied those groups most important to the Democratic Party’s future electoral chances — women, young people, Latinos and African Americans. Speaking directly to those groups Obama encouraged them to continue with the “great progress” America has made since his election. He explicitly thanked those members of his electoral coalition for their support and appealed to them to help set the Democrats’ priorities in 2010. Most importantly, Obama wants young people, minorities and women to help get out the vote in the upcoming elections, and for (then) new voters from 2008 to stay involved in politics in the future.

We must not run from the obvious. Who was absent from Obama’s appeal? White men. If you read the comment sections of conservative Web sites as the Washington Examiner, Breitbart, Politico, Dick Morris and others you can hear the pain of white men, and conservatives in particular, hurt and angered by how Obama has slighted and excluded them from this grand narrative.

As a black man listening to the repeated cries of pain and victimhood by white conservative men living during these first years of the Obama administration, I have been moved to confess to the realities of my own privilege. At these times we need one of our own to make our privilege and prejudice clear to us–an ally whose eyes are now open to injustice, one who in turn will shame us into action. Ultimately, I can only hope that we as black Americans, acting in the pursuit of fairness, justice and equality, can one day make amends for the many unearned privileges we have garnered since the election of Barack Obama.

Here are 15 ways I live a life of great privilege compared to oppressed white guys:

1.   If I join the Republican Party I will have a great advantage over my peers. I will receive funding to run against other black people. Black people who join the Republican Party are also guaranteed to be shown on TV at the Republican National Convention, and there is an excellent chance they will be asked to give a speech. Even if you can’t win a single election, black Republicans have job security for life.

2.   I will be placed directly behind many famous Republicans when they give speeches.

3.   In my professional life, I am blessed to be around people of a different race most of the time. This is very empowering and stimulating. Ultimately, this is an unearned advantage in a world that is increasingly diverse.

4.   I know the success of Barack Obama has been unsettling for many white Americans–especially those who would normally be the default choice for appointment to the highest levels of government. I understand that this change can be quite upsetting. I promise to be more empathetic to your pain and to be more patient in my efforts to understand the roots of your discontent.

5.   I have the luxury of knowing that I only have to be twice as good as my white colleagues and peers to be considered for the same positions. My broad range of skills are an unfair advantage in the workplace because they have afforded me opportunities to take on tasks and responsibilities my white colleagues have often been denied.

6.   Positive character traits such as humility and hard work are cultivated in me because I know I am held to a higher standard lest I be considered “lazy” or “arrogant” by my supervisors and peers.

7.   I know that my race is always an asset and never a liability. At will, I can play the “race card” and win any debate or dispute.

8.   People of color have long dominated the evening news. We are disproportionately represented in the coverage of many types of news stories, especially those featuring reports of violent, criminal behavior. Moreover, with Barack Obama’s domination of the evening news, the hyper-visibility of people of color is further encouraged in the mainstream media. To remedy this, I will do my best to support an increase in the amount of attention given to white people in the evening news and by popular culture at large.

9.   Black communities are afforded far more than their fair share of police protection. White communities can go days without seeing a police officer, but there is never any shortage of protection and service in black neighborhoods. Our streets are constantly swept for crime and would-be criminals. Surely we don’t deserve such heightened attention, but we are privileged to receive it nonetheless.

10.   People of color are given far more chances to go to prison and take the time to think about their crimes and rehabilitate themselves, than their white counterparts. Often white people are not held responsible for their criminal activity, thus denying them the moral value of learning from their mistakes.

11.   I can go shopping most of the time knowing I will be given extra attention. This extra attention to my safety through requests for identification when I would like to use a credit card or debit card are for my own protection. My fellow white shoppers are not afforded this level of concern or assistance.

12.   A great deal of attention is paid to the driving safety and comfort of black Americans. The police are very interested in making sure our cars are in working order, that we do not speed, and that we know exactly why we are driving in certain neighborhoods. It is very hard to get lost while driving in a white neighborhood if you are a black American. By comparison, white people are treated as though they are invisible, anonymous and unimportant while they are driving.

13.   I am often asked to speak for people of my own race. With Barack Obama’s election, I have to do this even more frequently. This privilege is unfair because it contributes to my intellectual, emotional and social growth in ways that white people are not generally afforded.

14.   Linked fate. Barack Obama’s success or failure reflects on me personally. Likewise, my success or failure reflects on Barack Obama. This sense of connectedness and lack of relative anonymity is wonderfully empowering for all people of color.

15.   I can find the literature, music and movies that represent my culture neatly cordoned off and near the front of the store for my convenience.

100 Years: President Celebrates NAACP Milestone

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Politico: In a direct address to black America, President Barack Obama said that while “there’s probably never been less discrimination in America than there is today… the pain of discrimination is still felt” by Latinos, Muslims and gays, as well as African-Americans.

In New York on Thursday to mark the centennial of the NAACP, Obama delivered a sweeping speech outlining his domestic policy, and recalling America’s journey from slavery to freedom. He praised civil-rights activists, saying, “because of what they did, we are a more perfect union.”

Yet, he said, in spite of the many strides, there is still work to be done in ending discrimination and closing the racial gaps in employment, education, health care and incarceration rates. [ READ MORE ]

Saggy Pants ‘Buttock Exposure’ Crack Down

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Cities Cracking Down on Saggy Pants — Some May Face Jail Time

The “Saggy Pants” fashion started in U.S. prisons, where inmates aren’t given belts with their baggy uniform pants to prevent hangings and beatings — a “gangster rap” craze featuring low-slung baggy pants sometimes held by the hands to prevent it from falling down the legs. Sometime the pants are worn so low, that boxer shorts or bare buttocks are in full view.

Saggy Pants Crackdown

“For young people, it’s a form of rebellion and identity,” Adrian “Easy A.D.” Harris, 43, a founding member of the Bronx’s legendary rap group Cold Crush Brothers. “The young people think it’s fashionable. They don’t think it’s negative.”

“The reason I don’t wear tight pants is because it’s easier to get money out of my pocket this way,” Wise said. “It’s just more comfortable,” says Mark Wise. My jeans sag for practical reasons.

“Are they going to go after construction workers and plumbers, because their pants sag, too?” Murray asked. “They’re stereotyping us,” says shop owner Mack Murray

The latest city to crack down on “Saggy Pants” is Flint, Michigan. Flint cops are cracking down on sagging pants, and violators of ordinance could face fines — even jail time.

Crackdown on

Flint residents now have to watch their butts because Police Chief David Dicks is on the lookout.

Dicks, who took over the department last month on an interim basis, announced that his officers would start arresting people wearing saggy pants that expose skivvies, boxer shorts or bare bottoms.

“Some people call it a fad,” Dicks told the Free Press this week while patrolling the streets of Flint. “But I believe it’s a national nuisance. It is indecent and thus it is indecent exposure, which has been on the books for years.”

On June 27, the chief issued a departmental memorandum telling officers: “This immoral self expression goes beyond freedom of expression.”

The crime, he says, is disorderly conduct or indecent exposure, both misdemeanors punishable by 93 days to a year in jail and/or fines up to $500.

Flint is often called one of the most violent cities in America, however in recent years, it has seen a drop in homicides.

Civil Liberties

Greg Gibbs, a lawyer and chair of the ACLU Flint chapter, said the crackdown sounds like a “vast waste of resources.”

“In Atlanta, we see this as racial profiling,” said Benetta Standly, statewide organizer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia. “It’s going to target African-American male youths. There’s a fear with people associating the way you dress with crimes being committed.”

Michigan ACLU Executive Director Kary Moss said race could become an issue if the chief aggressively enforces the law…[MORE >>]

Desperate Hillary ‘Clinging’ To The ‘Bigot Vote’

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

In desperation, Hillary Clinton is now explicitly referring to her appeal to “Hard-Working Americans, White Americans,” adding that she appeals to a wider coalition of voters — including whites who have not supported Barack Obama in recent contests.

“I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on,” she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article “that found how Sen. Obama’s support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me.”

“There’s a pattern emerging here,” she said.

Obama Nails In Coffin

Clinton’s blunt remarks about race came a day after primaries in Indiana and North Carolina dealt symbolic and mathematical blows to her White House ambitions.

Larry Sabato, head of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, notes quite correctly that at the end of the day her primary support doesn’t prove she’s more electable. Either Democrat will get “the vast majority” of the other’s primary election votes in a general election, he said, adding that Clinton’s comment was a “poorly worded” variation on the way analysts have been “slicing and dicing the vote in racial terms.” …..[more]

I construe Hillary’s comments as a suggestion that “blacks are lazy,”….a racial stereotype I expect to come from a ReTHUGlican and not a Democrat.

“Her statement seems to exclude African-Americans from being hard-working,” said Jamal Simmons, a Democratic strategist and CNN contributor, aligned to the Obama campaign, who is black. “Also, there are a lot of white Americans for Barack Obama. So it’s misleading and it’s not true,” said Mr. Simmons.

Mr. Simmons added:

“There is a very particular feeling that this couple(Bill and Hillary Clinton), that African-Americans had such regard for and trust in, has been at best dismissive towards Barack Obama and in many ways has used race and differentness as a weapon against him.”

Senator Diane Feinstein, a Clinton backer, has also indicated she wanted to hear “what Clinton’s strategy is,” adding: “The race is reaching a point now where there are negative dividends from it in terms of strife within the party.”

“Duck Hunting” Ma. Clinton however, appears unmoved by the “sniper-fire,” telling cheering supporters yesterday, in Charleston, West Virginia that the state’s primary next Tuesday, which she is expected to win, was “a test for me and a test for Senator Obama.

I also find it odd that Latino voters who have been supporting her in large numbers are not included in the “Hard Working White” coalition….and what about blacks? Won’t she need the most consistently loyal Democratic party voting block, if she becomes the nominee?

The “Bitch of Chappaqua, New York” is in full Kamikaze (suicide) Mode….The “Hill” has become so selfish she doesn’t mind destroying the Democratic Party,…. and the “bitching and moaning” does not bode well for future female candidates.

LOL!

This woman is running amok, and if the DNC does not quickly “reject and denounce,” her — she will drive such a monumental wedge between the voters so much so that it will be next to impossible to unite the party for the general election.

Al Gore, Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi and other big-wigs of the Democratic party need to step in and get this witch out of the race, before her “toxic waste” does extreme damage to the party…..and to Bill’s already “Lewinsky-Stained” legacy.

On the other hand, if she decides to ‘surrender’ within the next week or two, it will a ‘joy’ to watch Hillary stumping enthusiastically for Obama in the general election — essentially denying her current charge(s); that Obama is elitist and out of touch with middle-America.

Can’t wait for that… LOL!
