President Obama warned the nation Tuesday that the decades-old promise of a secure and rising middle class is under threat because of growing disparities between the rich and everyone else in America.
In an election-year State of the Union message that will likely serve as the template for the months of campaigning ahead, Obama outlined a series of steps that he believes will reinforce the tentative economic recovery, including proposals to eliminate tax incentives for companies to move jobs overseas, to make college more affordable and to expand help for credit-worthy homeowners looking to refinance mortgages at historically low interest rates. | From The Grapevine:
If Newt gets the nod, it’s official: Even God is voting Dem in 2012. — Jay, NYC The essential question is exactly how ignorant is the American electorate? It is apparent that the Know Nothings of the Right, particularly in SC, do not seem to have any recollection of who Newt really is. Has America’s overall knowledge base been sufficiently stripped by Foxx News, The Foxx Street Journal, Dancing with the Stars, Idol? If it has, then there is a real threat that Newt could be elected and the end of America, as we know it is in sight. If that happens, New Zealand must open up it’s immigration laws to allow those Americans with still functioning brains to escape. — Bobby Bow, New Jersey I will vote for the President but part of me wants Gingrich to win so that things will get so bad very quickly and then maybe, just maybe, we can throw these crazy right wing theories onto the scrap heap of history. — trblmkr, NYC Newt Gingrich is our worst nightmare. He is Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck rolled into one with a shot at the bully pulpit instead of a fox news microphone. He has mastered the same dark art practiced by Hammity and Beck– the ability to lie through his teeth while appealing to the absolute stupidest element in our American society. Don’t discount this man. — LKF, NY The Republican electorate isn’t merely looking for heat, as Bruni states. They’re looking for hate. And Newt is delivering it. He’s the perfect spokesman for the mean-spirited, cruel, insane party the G.O.P. has become. — Connie Boyd, Denver Who has faith that Gingrich is unelectable? Well, liberal Republicans may. Analysts. Democrats. Who may not? Dyed-in-the-wool Republicans. Some of the base new base who’d select Mickey Mouse over Obama: people who hate abhor helping the poor; jingoists; Ayn Rand ideologues of individualism-uber-alles; “family values” Main Streeters who read no history; rust-belt union-busters; and mad cow elephants — Tea Partiers, birthers, Birchers, anti-federalists, unreconstructed Secessionists, and racists. And scared independents, despairing of “hope”? Unemployed old-line Democrats, seeing their assets shrink and future recede? Are these groups small? Few enough to justify the faith that Newt won’t be nominated? Backed by billionaire gambling house owners and corps-as-folks, might Mr. Fired Speaker slip by? I hope not, but Gingrich is no Laffing matter. Nominating him seems our worst nightmare. But remember Nixon-Agnew? “W”-Cheney? McCain-Palin? 2 out of 3 won. P.T. Barnum may not have been bragging but realistic when he declared, “No one ever went broke betting against the intelligence of the American public”. — Dr. Bob Solomon Edmonton, Alberta |
