HB 56 & Anti-Immigrant Hate: ‘Apartheid’ Republicans Slide Alabama Back into ‘Jim Crow’ Terrorism

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

“This draconian initiative signed into law this morning by Gov. Robert Bentley is so oppressive that even Bull Connor himself would be impressed,” said Wade Henderson, head of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, referring to Birmingham’s notorious segregationist public safety commissioner from the civil rights era. “HB 56 is designed to do nothing more than terrorize the state’s Latino community.”

WASHINGTON: Alabama Law Bans Transporting, Housing Undocumented Immigrants — Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) signed an immigration bill into law last Thursday that will prohibit transporting or housing undocumented immigrants and require immigrants to carry papers, an even tougher spin-off of Arizona’s SB 1070.

The Alabama immigration law, which is set to go into effect on Sept. 1, follows Arizona’s lead in requiring police to ask for legal documents if they reasonably suspect someone is in the country illegally.

But the Alabama law goes one step further than SB 1070, which was passed last year and then challenged by the federal government. The Alabama law requires schools to check the citizenship of their students — even though undocumented children are allowed, under law, to attend K-12 schools — and penalizes businesses if they do not check immigration status. It also forbids drivers from transporting undocumented immigrants, even though Alabama does not allow people without proper papers to get driver’s licenses and transport themselves. [ READ MORE ]

When Did C-SPAN Become A Hub For Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric? For some unknown reason, on Friday, C-SPAN decided to host Roy Beck, executive director of anti-immigration group NumbersUSA, to talk about immigration policy. And Beck, whose strategy centers on advocating for an immigration system that will leave immigrants with no choice but to depart the United States en masse, appeared on the network’s Washington Journal program unchallenged. Not once during the more than half-hour interview did he go head-to-head against an immigrants’ rights activist or face off against a caller with an opposing viewpoint. This is odd considering the network and the show’s stated aims. [ READ MORE ]

Obama’s Mid-East Speech Elicits Deranged (Obama Siding With Terrorists) Attacks From Right-Wing Media

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

MMFA: Right-Wing media unleashed a crazed onslaught after President Obama’s speech on the Middle East, outrageously asserting that Obama “sided with terrorists” by saying that the 1967 borders should guide negotiations over the formation of a Palestinian state. But this position is nothing new, and American Jewish groups praised today’s speech. [ READ MORE ] [ RIGHT-WING MEDIA ATTACK OBAMA FOR ANNOUNCING ISRAEL POLICY ESPOUSED BY BUSH, FORMER ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER ]

Professional Islamophobe Pamela Geller took it up a notch by blogging: “Obama’s Middle East Policy Is ‘Obama’s Final Solution’.”

Fox’s syphilitic liar Sean Hannity declared: “Obama has thrown Israel under ‘a bus full of suicide bombers’,” while “professor” Osama Bin O’Reilly a.k.a Bill O’Reilly of the O’Fear Factor opined: “For every Muslim in the world that wants democracy and wants human rights, there’s one who doesn’t.”

Tricky Dick Morris, the always wrong Fox prognosticator exploded: Obama is “literally” asking Israel “to commit suicide!” — and the “Doctor of Democracy“, the man who ate the GOP — a racist pile of shit farted on his radio show: “Obama urged Israel to “destroy itself” and “submit its people to potential genocide.”

——————————————————————–

ENLARGE -- White America Has Lost Its MindThe right-wing rhetoric might make one falsely think that Republicans love Jews so much and vice-versa! For starters, Obama captured 78% of the Jewish vote to beat McCain.

Jewish Americans understand persecution, racism and bigotry — the core tenets of Republicanism — a morally bankrupt ideology of “hate thy colored neighbor” — which enjoys support from the most ignorant, racist and gullible people in America.

Racism and anti-Semitic rhetoric is perfectly acceptable among the right wing.

Republicans are the remnants of pre-civil rights era racists — who frequently hanged signs like ‘NO JEWS OR DOGS,‘outside businesses. Even today, high ranking Republicans frequently make racist remarks about Jews.

For example, in 2009 the ADL slammed two Republicans for calling Jews “penny-pinchers.

2010 Republican nominee for NY Governor, the bestial Carl Paladino trivialized the Holocaust by equating it with gay marriage.

Meanwhile, “Zionist” conspiracy theories frequently make rounds in right-wing blogs.

Commentators (notably the diseased Glenn Beck) at Fox News, the chief propaganda tool for Republican America frequently attack Jewish Americans while the executives look the other way.

NOTES: Fox has a long history of promoting anti-Semitic sources and mainstreaming people who have associations with anti-Semitic groups — [ READ MORE ]

Israel is a wedge issue, a political football for both sides — but for Republicans to “claim” through harsh rhetoric that they love Jews more — is pure baloney.

So, the right-wing outrage in Media and politics on Obama’s Mid-East speech of yesterday — is just but a pathetic show and yet another attempt to discredit the “darkie” in THEIR WHITEHOUSE.

The New Jim Crow: More Black Males in Prison Today Than Those Enslaved in The 1850′s

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

More African American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began, Michelle Alexander told a standing room only house at the Pasadena Main Library IN March 2011, the first of many jarring points she made in a riveting presentation. Alexander, currently a law professor at Ohio State, had been brought in to discuss her year-old bestseller, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.”

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in The Age of Colorblindness.Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly: Contrary to the rosy picture of race embodied in Barack Obama’s political success and Oprah Winfrey’s financial success, legal scholar Alexander argues vigorously and persuasively that [w]e have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.

Jim Crow and legal racial segregation has been replaced by mass incarceration as a system of social control (More African Americans are under correctional control today… than were enslaved in 1850).

Alexander reviews American racial history from the colonies to the Clinton administration, delineating its transformation into the war on drugs.

She offers an acute analysis of the effect of this mass incarceration upon former inmates who will be discriminated against, legally, for the rest of their lives, denied employment, housing, education, and public benefits.

Most provocatively, she reveals how both the move toward colorblindness and affirmative action may blur our vision of injustice: most Americans know and don’t know the truth about mass incarceration–but her carefully researched, deeply engaging, and thoroughly readable book should change that.

“Explosive debut…alarming, provocative and convincing.” –Kirkus Reviews

Click To Enlarge.“Michelle Alexander’s brave and bold new book paints a haunting picture in which dreary felon garb, post-prison joblessness, and loss of voting rights now do the stigmatizing work once done by colored-only water fountains and legally segregated schools. With dazzling candor, Alexander argues that we all pay the cost of the new Jim Crow.” –Lani Guinier, professor at Harvard Law School and author ofLift Every Voice: Turning a Civil Rights Setback into a New Vision of Social Justice” and “The Miner’s Canary: Enlisting Race, Resisting Power, Transforming Democracy (Nathan I.Huggins Lectures)

“For every century there is a crisis in our democracy, the response to which defines how future generations view those who were alive at the time. In the 18th century it was the transatlantic slave trade, in the 19th century it was slavery, in the 20th century it was Jim Crow. Today it is mass incarceration. Alexander’s book offers a timely and original framework for understanding mass incarceration, its roots to Jim Crow, our modern caste system, and what must be done to eliminate it. This book is a call to action.” –Benjamin Todd Jealous, President and CEO, NAACP

“With imprisonment now the principal instrument of our social policy directed toward poorly educated black men, Michelle Alexander argues convincingly that the huge racial disparity of punishment in America is not the mere result of neutral state action. She sees the rise of mass incarceration as opening up a new front in the historic struggle for racial justice. And, she’s right. If you care about justice in America, you need to read this book!” –Glenn C. Loury, economist at Brown University and author ofThe Anatomy of Racial Inequality (W.E.B. Du Bois Lectures).”

“After reading The New Jim Crow, Michelle Alexander’s stunning work of scholarship, one gains the terrible realization that, for people of color, the American criminal justice system resembles the Soviet Union’s gulag—the latter punished ideas, the former punishes a condition.” –David Levering Lewis, Pulitzer-prize winning historian at NYU and author ofW. E. B. Du Bois, 1919-1963: The Fight for Equality and the American Century

“We need to pay attention to Michelle Alexander’s contention that mass imprisonment in the U.S. constitutes a racial caste system. Her analysis reflects the passion of an advocate and the intellect of a scholar.” –Marc Mauer, Executive Director, The Sentencing Project, author of “Race to Incarcerate (Revised and Updated Edition)

“A powerful analysis of why and how mass incarceration is happening in America, The New Jim Crow should be required reading for anyone working for real change in the criminal justice system.” –Ronald E. Hampton, Executive Director, National Black Police Association

Obama’s New Black Enemy — Conservative Mascot, Punk Ass, Uncle-Tom Herman Cain

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Herman Cain’s shtick is a version of race minstrelsy where he performs “authentic negritude” as wish fulfillment for White Conservative fantasies. Like the fountain at Lourdes, Cain in his designated role as black Conservative mascot, absolves the White racial reactionaries of their sins. This is a refined performance that Black Conservatives have perfected over many decades and centuries of practice.Chauncey DeVega [ READ MORE ]

   [By: Dr. Boyce Watkins]
Boyce WatkinsHerman Cain Plays the Race Card Against Barack Obama: It appears that Herman Cain, who is expected to be a black presidential candidate, has the race card locked and loaded for his sprint toward the White House.

Recently, Cain was asked about race during a New Hampshire campaign speech. When asked about this controversial topic, Cain had this to say:

“Now people are over this first black president thing,” he said. “But there are some people who will say, ‘I’m not going to vote for another black guy because this one didn’t work out. And my response is, ‘Well, what about those 43 white guys you put in there? How did they work out? Don’t condemn me because the first black one was bad.”

There was another interesting episode when Cain was asked on his radio show why he speaks so highly of the founding fathers, even though they owned slaves.

“They set the bar high when they said all men were created equal,” Cain said. “They could have set it where they were that day. They set it high so this nation could work up to that ideal.”

Herman Cain — A ‘Butt-Licking’ Uncle Tom

One thing that people can say about Herman Cain is that he was a successful businessman. As the CEO and part owner of Godfather’s Pizza, Cain has accumulated enough wealth and success to consider himself to be a serious candidate for the presidency. With that said, Cain also has a set of views that are reflective of the diversity of opinions within the African-American community, presenting an interesting contrast to those who want to put all black people into a nice, neat, little “liberal” box.

Let’s be clear, I don’t agree with Herman Cain. I have a difficult time appreciating any African American who panders for votes by effectively saying, “I stand with you in your disdain for the way black people behave. I assure you that I’m different from the rest of them.”

Such a divide-and-conquer political strategy has been used since we had the house negro/field negro divide during slavery (there is no faster route to the top of the political heap than by becoming a black Republican). Rather than using hatred toward President Obama as a weapon for his own political advancement, Cain might be more respectable if he simply stood on his own credentials (as his fellow conservative Colin Powell might do). Being a black conservative presidential candidate doesn’t mean you have to disrespect the first black president.

With that said, many of Cain’s views reflect a peculiar paradox within the black community: the fact that black people are actually incredibly conservative. When it comes to views on gay marriage, abortion, the separation of church and state, etc., African Americans have quite a few viewpoints that align more closely with the Republican right than with liberals who’ve come to “save us.” The problem for Republicans, however, is that they insist on advocating for programs that hurt the poor, which has a disproportionate impact on the African-American community. Their opposition to Affirmative Action and constant attacks on President Obama don’t help their cause very much either.

While the existence of men like Herman Cain represents a stomach-churning example of how the disease of racism continues to affect our society, the truth is that Cain also represents the very best of what America can possibly be. I won’t vote for Herman Cain, but I am glad that there are black politicians who allow African Americans to jump outside of predefined stereotypes given to us by the media and our political leaders. There’s no one way to be black, and both Herman Cain and President Obama reflect the diversity of the black experience in America.

Republicans, the Party of Nothing

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

   Columnist – John Sammon
Columnist - John Sammon. Click to view larger picture.I would like to ask this question. Aside from being on the wrong side of every social advancement made over the past 100 years including Civil Rights, Medicare, Social Security, Child Labor, Women’s Rights, Equal Jobs and Housing, the right to collectively bargain, to Unionize, what has the Republican Party ever passed?

What have they ever done except oppose?

Anything that helps lower-income Americans, Republicans view as wasteful spending.

What has the Republican Party ever done just once in its entire history to advance social justice? Launching wars on tiny impoverished Middle Eastern countries based on false weapons of mass destruction to grab their oil doesn’t count.

The answer is zip. Zero. Nada. Nothing. In fact, the Republican Party has opposed all of the things mentioned above and if it had its way, none of the above would exist. It would still be an 1890′s America.

The Republicans have a long history of nothing, except bad. Three successive Republican presidents, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover were in office leading up to the Great Depression of 1932. Bush and Cheney presided over the near collapse of this country two years ago, the worst since 1932. The trickle-down economics championed by Reagan and the fantasy that money hoarded by the ultra-rich and the tax loop-hole privileges they enjoy would make life better for the dying middle class and the poor is a proven failure.

John Boehner, the current Speaker of the House of Representatives, when he isn’t crying from the rostrum, basically reiterated the same thing a few weeks ago, saying “so be it,” in other words, “let them eat cake,” when told an action could result in people losing their jobs. It’s clear. He like other Republicans hope the American people suffer and the economy goes down the drain so Republicans can gain seats in the next election. Your misery is his gain.

Not a lot has changed.

The Republicans rail about socialism and give-aways and entitlements. How many former Republican Congressmen and women have refused their Social Security benefits, those who qualify? None. How many Americans if a poll was taken, would like to see Social Security and Medicaid abolished because they are entitlement schemes enacted by socialist liberal traitors?

None, except a few nuts.

All the Republicans have done since the Civil War, the last time they were proactive, backing Lincoln and emancipating slaves, all they have done ever since is to obstruct, except for wars. They love war. They say they stand for limiting big government and opposing higher taxes —-a lie borne out by the mushrooming debts incurred under both Reagan and Bush.

Reagan, the God of Republicans, raised taxes 11 times.

What original ideas have they conceived? None. What legislation have Republicans engineered that like Social Security most Americans benefit from and endorse? None.

Reagan supporters also claim that he alone won the Cold War, though it was the ineptitude, wastefulness and corruption of the Russians themselves that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. A system that worked wouldn’t be brought down by one man. That’s nonsense only a Republican could believe.

Bush and Cheney destroyed the American economy and started two un-winnable wars.

What have Republicans ever done for the common good?

The tea-baggers screaming for blood at one of their frenzy rallies hinting that they’re going to take up arms or shoot the president, they’re all products of a government-run public schools system. They’re not going to give up their Social Security or Medicare. They like government intervention when it benefits them.

So, why do they scream? If they were honest, they’d tell you, I don’t want my money being given to niggers. Niggers can include more than just African Americans, whom conservatives secretly consider to be freeloaders and brainless animals only fit for basketball and who leech off government, when historically, black Americans have had to look to the federal government to give them redress to blatant racism and double standards. Individual states, particularly those in the South, wouldn’t do it.

Niggers now include women, gays, immigrants, Mexicans, liberals and anyone who looks different, and of course, Muslims, a religion that existed for countless centuries before some Americans decided to add them to the list of those already hated for no other reason than 9-11. Condemn an entire religion? They used to do that to Catholics and Jews. Some still do.

To mask their racism and to try and collect so-called minority votes, Republicans search for women and blacks to serve as token figureheads of their party. That chicanery at least makes some sense.

But I ask again. What have they ever done except say “No?”
