They have all received adequate media coverage. But the other genre of conflict has not received the same kind of coverage, yet it is crucial in the pursuit of a global and modern Africa.

This conflict derives from all forms of discrimination including racism and xenophobia. It is vicious and has gone on for some time. These forms of discrimination are serious, and efforts have been made to put them on the global agenda.

The most appropriate example is the current attacks on foreigners in South Africa. The question that begs answers is, why at this time in Africa? All sectors of a society have an obligation to contribute to the resolution of this conflict. We need to examine the extent to which as leaders, scholars and policy makers, we can intervene in this scourge called xenophobia.

It is argued that xenophobia is a result of poor intercultural communication. Members of one culture do not understand, appreciate and accommodate those from another culture. They lack adequate information to deal with such people with the least stress and threat.

But acquiring such information does not come easy and the poor management of communication often leads to strife. This could be the case in South Africa. One major source of information that allows us a wide world view and a more holistic perception and appreciation of others is the mass media. But the mass media, as inanimate objects, cannot do anything. It is those who use and manipulate them that can make the difference.

Xenophobia is a global problem. Although the phenomenon is ubiquitous in contemporary societies, its targets vary across countries and nations. It is such that even those who have been a subject of hate also develop hatred for others. But how does this hatred come about? Anthropologists and other social scientists posit that a population composed mainly of foreigners is an environment in which xenophobia can easily thrive.

They distinguish three theoretical approaches to the rise and diffusion of hatred. The first relates to socio-economic status of individuals, the second pertains to their cultural identity and the third the general attributes of society.

Source of hatred

The first approach derives from the “power theory” – a paradigm that views the relationship between groups as a function of their competitive positions. This concept suggests that a threat of one particular group to another is a source of hatred. When people feel insecure in the face of threat, they portray resentment and hate. But here, the intensity of hate need not necessarily depend on real competition on the job market but on the perception of threat. This is sufficient ground to induce animosity. Much of this is absent in the South African situation.

The cultural symbolic approach holds that animosity towards the other is not a consequence of economic competition between rival groups. It is a product of early political and value socialisation. The main issue here is the fear of loss of social status and identity.

Thus, cultural differences among people could be responsible for conflicts and hatred. In this approach, it can be explained that people would prefer to be surrounded by their own kind rather than be exposed to “strangers”. Defining a group of people as “un-belonging” to the national “we” deprives them of the right to belong. Much of this is also absent in South Africa.

The third approach, termed phenomenology, attributes xenophobia not to economic strains or cultural divergence but to general attributes of society. When society experiences deep crises, which occur intermittently, anomic tensions encroach upon social postures.

This leads to a crisis of collective identity “so that the calm self-certainty which might enable unproblematic relations with the minorities gets lost”. Under this approach, xenophobia is interpreted as a way of reassuring the national self and its boundaries, as an attempt at making sense of the world in times of crisis. This could be happening to indigenous South Africans.

To start with, the impeding fallout between President Thabo Mbeki and Africa National Congress (ANC) leader Jacob Zuma could be disillusioning to many ordinary citizens of African descent.

Many of them subscribe to ANC with a passion yet they find themselves on the sidelines when major party decisions are being made. At the same time, they have not benefited from the economic prosperity of their country.

Many South Africans still live in squalid conditions and the dream of land reform has turned into a pipe dream. These issues run so deep in their collective psyche that they need reassurance of economic and social survival. But they are directing their anger at the wrong enemy.

Many of the low class Zimbabweans, Malawians, Zambians and nationals of other countries are escaping economic hardship and political violence which South Africa has refused to acknowledge as a problem, especially in Zimbabwe.

They should commit themselves to assisting them to the best of their capacity. And this applies to other countries with a chance to host other Africans in need of refuge and sanctuary.

Obama: Rush Limbaugh and Lou Dobbs are hate mongers

Obama at a fundraiser in Miami Beach last night

“A certain segment has basically been feeding a kind of xenophobia,” Obama said. “There’s a reason why hate crimes against Hispanic people doubled last year. If you have people like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh ginning things up, it’s not surprising that would happen.”

Obama on Hit List

Columnist - John Sammon
Columnist - John Sammon. Click to view larger picture.Barack Obama unfortunately has got assassination attempt written all over him. I wish I didn’t have to say this, but my clairvoyant sensors are ringing. Before you laugh, I wrote on my blog Sammonsays that “people would drown en mass” five days before Hurricane Katrina struck (titled Doomsday Five). Katrina was also a Category Five storm.

I also accurately predicted the outcome of the Iraq War six years ago, and the death of the TV Crocodile Hunter before they happened.

I could go on.

Obama has got several things about him to make me issue this warning (a new version of the Ides of March).

First, he’s personable and young. A prime target. Anyone promising change or a new direction runs more risk because they represent a threat to the old established business-as-usual moneyed interests. It also goes without saying that as the first African American president, Obama will become a target to every racist nut case.

America is a violent country. A country of haters. The most violent in the world.

Also, Democrats by their very nature consider themselves to be “populists.” That means they seem to like the so-called “common people,” and actually make physical attempts to go out among them and shake hands, which leaves them more vulnerable to assassination.

Republicans on the other hand tend to be more secretive. They believe in secret government. As a rule, they don’t like wading through crowds, “average” people for whom they often have disdain. Usually, the only time you see George Bush is when he waves walking across the lawn from his helicopter.

But it’s Obama’s perceived challenge to the fat cats that has me really worried, and my clairvoyant harp strings chiming.

The oil companies are strangling the American people, raising gas prices. They always explain that their to-infinity profits are simply a result of rewarding stock holders. But they’re killing the golden goose. Without knowing it.

Rising prices will cause Americans to seek other means of travel and boycott gasoline, which in turn will lessen global warming. Rising fuel prices will also cause other, new entrepreneurs to fill the gap by creating hybrid, electric and more fuel efficient cars.

Here’s a historical example. What happened in Prohibition when Americans were confronted with a situation (law) that to them was unacceptable? They found ways around it. They made their own booze.

Can’t you see the irony? In their greed and stupidity, oil company executives are (unwittingly) killing their own industry and helping the environment.

But back to Obama. Obama will try to rein in big oil. He may also attempt universal health care. This will put him on the hit list of moneyed interests.

For if the truth be known, in some ways, the oil company moguls and those in the insurance and health industry games are not that different from the Mafia and organized crime. They have lucrative windfalls they will fanatically protect. Billions are at stake.

Any political leader who attempts real change to the industrial, military, multi mega world conglomerate that America represents…will be viewed as a grave threat.

I’ll warn you all that Obama is a prime candidate for assassination. And it makes me sick to think about it.

I believe Obama will be the victim of an assassination attempt if he’s elected. That’s sad, because he may be the last, best hope we have to retain any semblance of our own humanity.

Mike Huckabee’s Stupid Joke About Someone Shooting At Barack Obama

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Mike Huckabee Sucks“Republican Mike Huckabee responded to a sharp offstage sound during his speech to the National Rifle Assn. by suggesting that it was Barack Obama diving to the floor because someone had aimed a gun at him.

Hearing a loud noise, Huckabee interrupted his speech to say: “That was Barack Obama. He just tripped off a chair. He’s getting ready to speak and somebody aimed a gun at him and he — he dove for the floor.

There were a few murmurs in the crowd.

The Obama campaign had no comment.” — Quotation from the Los Angeles Times

Mike Huckabee is one of the few politicians who can ad lib quips that haven’t been written, vetted and analyzed by campaign staffers. His jokes were a breathe of fresh air in the Republican presidential debates, but he really stunk up the joint with this clunker.

Perhaps Huckabee thought he could get away with a crack about gunfire at a meeting of the NRA, but even that crowd of troglodytes was appalled at his insensitivity.

Huckabee’s quip must have gone over like a lead balloon in the Obama camp, the presumptive Democratic nominee has received numerous death threats.

Obama is a charismatic, eloquent and intelligent statesman who transcends race and politics, he has united people of all races, colors and creeds.

But there are always the loonies who can’t stand the idea of a black president, and they don’t need Huckabee planting any ideas in their heads.

Maybe if Huckabee were black, he wouldn’t have made that offhand wisecrack. But Huckabee is a hillbilly and we’ve already had a hillbilly president. There isn’t any nut who would have killed Huckabee to prevent a country bumpkin from inhabiting the White House.

Could Huckabee Be Wishing Obama — Assassination?

Later Friday, Huckabee issued an apology: ‘During my speech at the NRA, a loud noise backstage that sounded like a chair falling distracted the crowd and interrupted my speech. I made an offhand remark that was in no way intended to offend or disparage Sen. Obama. I apologize that my comments were offensive. That was never my intention.’” — Quotation from the Los Angeles Times

Huckabee conducted himself like a gentleman during his presidential run, he never resorted to name-calling or dirty politics. I believe he is truly sorry that his witticism backfired, and I don’t think he meant to offend Obama.

When Huckabee heard that chair falling he should have made this one-liner:

Fellow NRA members, relax, don’t reach for your assault rifles. That was just the sound of a drunk NRA member out in the parking lot shooting himself in the foot.
