It’s not surprising that New Gingrich would make such a condescending and racist statement. The ethically-challenged Gingrich frequently disparagingly refers to President Barack Obama as the “food stamps president.”
Unfortunately, Gingrich isn’t the only GOP presidential aspirant playing the race card, Rick Santorum was talking about entitlement reform when he said, “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.” We are all too familiar with Ron Paul’s infamous newsletters, in which he made many derogatory statements about blacks, homos[e]xuals and Jews.
The African American community isn’t desperately waiting to hear from the ethically-challenged former Speaker of the House, on welfare reform or any other subject.
Gingrich and Santorum are only slightly more sophisticated than the racists politicians of yesterday who would have warned white voters:
These Negroes are living high of the hog, munching on fried chicken and eating watermelon at the expense of God-fearing decent White people. If elected I will end all welfare programs!
Gingrich’s statement presumes and implies that black people are demanding food stamps, when the truth is that out-of-work blacks are demanding the same thing that out-of work whites are demanding: JOBS.
It’s very telling that the only time the Republican presidential candidates mention the African American community, is when they stigmatize them as leeches who live off the welfare state.
Any person of color who votes for anybody the likes of Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry (remeber the n-work rock controversy?), needs to have his head examined.

MSNBC:Slate’s Dave Weigel reminds us that Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are the only candidates to have been pranked by the venerable comedian-actor Sacha Baron Cohen. The video below shows Gingrich’s awkwardly hilarious 2006 interview with “Ali G.” But Ron Paul had an even worse awkward encounter with Cohen in his incarnation of “Bruno” in the 2009 film.
The scene with Paul, filmed in early 2008, occurs about halfway through the movie, after Bruno gets the idea that you have to make a sex tape to become famous.
Cut to a nondescript hotel suite where Bruno sits across from Ron Paul. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, a light blows out on the set. Bruno apologizes for the technical difficulties and suggests that he and Paul wait in the other room while the crew fixes the light.
The other room, it turns out, is a bedroom. The lighting is low, and the film is now grainy?not unlike a sex tape?as it cuts to a hidden spy camera. There’s a spread of Champagne and strawberries and caviar on a table.
Bruno tells Paul to make himself comfortable. Paul sits down on the bed. Bruno turns on some music and starts dancing. Paul is visibly uneasy but doesn’t say anything at first. He picks up a newspaper and pretends to read it. “You can tell at each weird gay detail, he [chalks] it up to, This guy is European,” says one of the attendees.
Finally, Paul asks what’s going on. “Don’t worry about it, Dr. Paul,” says Bruno, who then unbuckles his belt and drops his pants. At that point, Paul snaps up and storms out of the room. [ READ MORE ]

As America’s middle class battles for its survival on the Wisconsin barricades – against various Koch Oil surrogates and the corporate toadies at Fox News – fans of enlightenment, democracy and justice can take comfort from a significant victory north of the Wisconsin border. Fox News will not be moving into Canada after all! The reason: Canadian regulators announced last week they would reject efforts by Canada’s right-wing Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to repeal a law that forbids lying on broadcast news.
Canada’s Radio Act requires that “a licenser may not broadcast … any false or misleading news.” The provision has kept Fox News and right-wing talk radio out of Canada and helped make Canada a model for liberal democracy and freedom. As a result of that law, Canadians enjoy high quality news coverage, including the kind of foreign affairs and investigative journalism that flourished in this country before Ronald Reagan abolished the “Fairness Doctrine” in 1987. Political dialogue in Canada is marked by civility, modesty, honesty, collegiality, and idealism that have pretty much disappeared on the US airwaves. When Stephen Harper moved to abolish the anti-lying provision of the Radio Act, Canadians rose up to oppose him fearing that their tradition of honest non-partisan news would be replaced by the toxic, overtly partisan, biased and dishonest news coverage familiar to American citizens who listen to Fox News and talk radio. Harper’s proposal was timed to facilitate the launch of a new right-wing network, “Sun TV News” which Canadians call “Fox News North.”
Harper, often referred to as “George W. Bush’s Mini Me,” is known for having mounted a Bush-like war on government scientists, data collectors, transparency, and enlightenment in general. He is a wizard of all the familiar tools of demagoguery; false patriotism, bigotry, fear, selfishness and belligerent religiosity.
Harper’s attempts to make lying legal on Canadian television are a stark admission that right-wing political ideology can only dominate national debate through dishonest propaganda. Since corporate profit-taking is not an attractive vessel for populism, a political party or broadcast network that makes itself the tool of corporate and financial elites must lie to make its agenda popular with the public. In the Unites States, Fox News and talk radio, the sock puppets of billionaires and corporate robber barons, have become the masters of propaganda and distortion on the public airwaves. Fox News’ notoriously biased and dishonest coverage of the Wisconsin’s protests is a prime example of the brand of news coverage Canada has smartly avoided. During his recent visit to post-Christian England, the Pope was met by thousands of protesters. It warmed my heart to see the citizens of a secular democratic state rise up in protest against the leader of a misogynist and repressive religious and financial empire.
But I am really surprised and thrilled that thousands of Spaniards, not just gay activists, protested the pontiff’s visit. If a predominantly Roman Catholic country isn’t ecstatic about the visit of the Pope, maybe there’s hope that in a few generations organized religion will lose its grip on humankind.
During the mass at La Sagrada Family basilica, the homophobic leader of the Roman Catholic Church ranted against homosexuality.
For millennia the Catholic Church has persecuted gays and lesbians, and the gentle and loving gays responding not by threatening the Pope, but by staging a kiss-in.
I’m persuaded that if Jesus Christ returned to Spain, he would make common cause with the gay activists, and condemn the intolerance of the Pope.
