Appearing on MSNBC’s Chris Mathews Show, old man Alan Simpson spoke the truth — and nothing but the truth. His party, the G.O.P — is infested with homophobic, misogynous, morally bankrupt and hypocritical [white men]. Simpson was alluding to the well known Republican contempt and loathing of women, girls and the homosexual community.

Simpson said:

“We have homophobes [ Rick Santorum ] in our party. That’s disgusting to me. We’re all human beings. We’re all God’s children. … it makes you sort out hard what Reagan said, you know, “stick with your folks.”‘ But I’m not sticking with people who are homophobic, anti-women, you know, moral values while you’re diddling your secretary [ Newt Gingrich ], while you’re giving a speech on moral values. Come on, get off of it.”

Simpson singled out G.O.P 2012 contender Rick ‘Man on Dog‘ Santorum who “said some cruel things. Cruel, cruel things about homosexuals.” Santorum has frequently compared homosexuality to bestiality, and has been one of the most obnoxious Republican critics of the LGBT community.

The current G.O.P contention that Planned Parenthood is an exclusive abortion mill, and their total disregard for a woman’s right to reproductive healthcare — prompted Simpson to label the G.O.P “anti-women:”

“Who the hell is for abortion? I don’t know anybody running around with a sign that says, ‘Have an abortion! They’re wonderful!’ They’re hideous, but they’re a deeply intimate and personal decision, and I don’t think men legislators should even vote on the issue.”

The old man hit the nail square on the head. The Grand Old White Party is dominated by rich, limp, old white men — has a history of contempt not only for women, but also for minorities — blacks, Hispanics, immigrants and sundry; a party consisting of a dwindling white non-urban America that is aflame with grievances and awash in self-pity as the country hurtles into the 21st century and leaves it behind….per Frank Rich of the New York Times.

Alan Simpson was a Republican Senator from Wyoming for 18 years, and now serves as the co-chair of President Obama’s debt commission.

“About 200 people protested against Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday by jeering and staging a gay “kiss-in.”

The protest by gays and lesbians took place as Benedict was being driven in his bullet-proof popemobile to celebrate mass at the city’s iconic basilica, La Sagrada Familia (Holy Family).

The Pope did not react to the gay-kiss demonstration near the church, and the protesters were outnumbered by thousands of flag-waving supporters of the pontiff.

During his recent visit to post-Christian England, the Pope was met by thousands of protesters. It warmed my heart to see the citizens of a secular democratic state rise up in protest against the leader of a misogynist and repressive religious and financial empire.

But I am really surprised and thrilled that thousands of Spaniards, not just gay activists, protested the pontiff’s visit. If a predominantly Roman Catholic country isn’t ecstatic about the visit of the Pope, maybe there’s hope that in a few generations organized religion will lose its grip on humankind.

During the mass at La Sagrada Family basilica, the homophobic leader of the Roman Catholic Church ranted against homosexuality.

For millennia the Catholic Church has persecuted gays and lesbians, and the gentle and loving gays responding not by threatening the Pope, but by staging a kiss-in.

I’m persuaded that if Jesus Christ returned to Spain, he would make common cause with the gay activists, and condemn the intolerance of the Pope.

“Former vice president Dick Cheney said yesterday that he supports gays being able to marry but believes states, not the federal government, should make the decision.

‘I think, you know, freedom means freedom for everyone,’ Cheney said in a speech at the National Press Club. ‘I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish.’

As a liberal I find Dick Cheney’s stand on most issues anathema, but I commend him for taking an enlightened view on same-sex marriage.

Cheney has an intelligent, attractive and very accomplished gay daughter, it makes it very difficult for him to accept the conservative view that homosexuals are degenerates. If evangelicals and conservative Republicans realized how many of their friends, family members, and co-workers were gay, they would be forced to admit that gays are just like everyone else — no better, no worse.

I disagree with Cheney that same-sex marriage should be a state issue. Having the freedom to marry the person that you love, regardless of gender, is such a basic and fundamental right, it should be protected by the Constitution. Didn’t we learn anything from history, when Southern states argued that slavery was a states rights issue?

Dick Cheney has taken a more enlightened view on same-sex marriage than the President of the United States. Obama is against same-sex marriage, he throws gays and lesbians the civil unions bone.

Why are human rights organizations giving Obama a free pass? Everyone who believes in human rights, and not just gays and lesbians should demand that the cowardly Obama come out in favor of same-sex marriage.
