I just finished re-reading the book — “The I Hate Republicans Reader: Why the GOP is Totally Wrong About Everything.” I wish the author could update it to 2009.

“This bill stinks,” said Lindsey Graham of South Carolina during the Senate debate on the package.

I’m not joking. “Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban,” said Representative Pete Sessions of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

The president was even accused – oh, my goodness – of working in the Oval Office without his suit jacket on.

On CNN (see below), Republicans Rollins and Castellanos compare recovery plan to Soviet and Cuban communism, socialism

The simple truth is that most Republican politicians would like Mr. Obama to fail because that is their ticket to a quick return to power. I think the president is a more formidable opponent than they realize.

Mr. Obama is like a championship chess player, always several moves ahead of friend and foe alike. He’s smart, deft, elegant and subtle. While Lindsey Graham was behaving like a 6-year-old on the Senate floor and Pete Sessions was studying passages in his Taliban handbook, Mr. Obama and his aides were assessing what’s achievable in terms of stimulus legislation and how best to get there. — [ MORE ]

The GOP’s White Supremacy

When a 19 year-old white supremacist recently gained a seat on the Palm Beach County Republican Executive Committee, the election created such an outcry that embarrassed local politicians used a technicality to block his seating.

The entire process was buffoonish, although the views of the spawn of a grand wizard of the KKK and his supporters were not. Events such as this, or the stunning success of David Duke in Louisiana in 1990, occur every few years within the GOP, a reminder of the party’s racist faction.

Even more standard for Republicans, especially in the year that saw Barack Obama’s election, are the off-key comments about uppitiness, Senators whistling Dixie, and, most recently, a funny little party-endorsed mailer called "Barack the Magic Negro."

All of this stupidity, and hatred, is a symptom of the larger problem for the Republican Party: it is utterly unrepresentative of America in the 21st century. Its Congressional representation is nearly uniformly white, and overwhelmingly male.

So much so, in fact, that there is not one single African-American GOP member of Congress (out of 219 or 220); nor, for that matter, are there any black GOP Governors (out of 22).

There are just four Republican Latinos in Congress, all Florida Cuban-Americans; one of them, Senator Mel Martinez, has
