During his recent visit to post-Christian England, the Pope was met by thousands of protesters. It warmed my heart to see the citizens of a secular democratic state rise up in protest against the leader of a misogynist and repressive religious and financial empire.

But I am really surprised and thrilled that thousands of Spaniards, not just gay activists, protested the pontiff’s visit. If a predominantly Roman Catholic country isn’t ecstatic about the visit of the Pope, maybe there’s hope that in a few generations organized religion will lose its grip on humankind.

During the mass at La Sagrada Family basilica, the homophobic leader of the Roman Catholic Church ranted against homosexuality.

For millennia the Catholic Church has persecuted gays and lesbians, and the gentle and loving gays responding not by threatening the Pope, but by staging a kiss-in.

I’m persuaded that if Jesus Christ returned to Spain, he would make common cause with the gay activists, and condemn the intolerance of the Pope.

Televangelists and a few conservative politicians are still demonizing gays and lesbians to raise funds and win votes. These bigots are oblivious that the Moral Majority has lost the culture wars.

The vast majority of the American public believes homosexuals should be allowed to serve in the military openly, and even many prominent generals have come out in favor of repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” It’s only a matter of time before Congress repeals this discriminatory policy.

Many enlightened countries already allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military, and there has been no breakdown of discipline or morale. When “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is finally repealed, chaos won’t ensue, and we will remain the most feared and the most powerful armed forces in the world.

The few homophobic Neanderthals who want our brave gay and lesbians soldiers to remain second-class citizens are resorting to fear and demagoguery. It’s absolute garbage to allege that repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will result in male rape and sexual bullying. This might be a wet dream of these religious fascists, but it’s not a reality in the countries that allow homosexuals to serve openly.

If Christian parents want to protect their male children from being raped, they shouldn’t allow them to come anywhere near a Catholic Church. There is strict discipline in the military, and soldiers who misbehave in any way will pay a heavy price. But priests can molest and rape boys with impunity; pedophile priests know that their superiors will cover up their crimes.

“Focus On The Family“, the conservative group that is fighting repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’, is on the wrong side of morality and history. In a few years many of their own members will come out of the closet, and renounce their hypocrisy and homophobia.

If evangelicals and conservative Republicans realized how many of their friends, family members, and co-workers were gay, they would be forced to admit that gays are just like everyone else — no better, no worse.

I disagree with Cheney that same-sex marriage should be a state issue. Having the freedom to marry the person that you love, regardless of gender, is such a basic and fundamental right, it should be protected by the Constitution. Didn’t we learn anything from history, when Southern states argued that slavery was a states rights issue?

Dick Cheney has taken a more enlightened view on same-sex marriage than the President of the United States. Obama is against same-sex marriage, he throws gays and lesbians the civil unions bone.

Why are human rights organizations giving Obama a free pass? Everyone who believes in human rights, and not just gays and lesbians should demand that the cowardly Obama come out in favor of same-sex marriage.

Nine gay men in Senegal have been sent to jail for “indecent conduct and unnatural acts“.

Homosexual acts are illegal in Senegal but lawyers for the men said the sentence was the harshest ever handed down to gay men in the country.

The judge added three years to the maximum five-year sentence after ruling that the men were also members of a criminal organisation.

Most of them belonged to an association set up to fight HIV and Aids.

“This is the first time that the Senegalese legal system has handed down such a harsh sentence against gays,” said Issa Diop, one of the men’s four defence lawyers.
