For the non native speakers, ricochet is a military term that defines the firing of guns or howitzers, usually with small charges, at an elevation of only a few degrees, so as to cause the balls or shells to bound or skip along the ground. (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Ricochet+firing).

I find good reason to use the term for an otherwise idiotic article written by an ignorant and uneducated Kenyan lawyer who runs a shadowy firm deeply connected with (if not created by) the darkest side of the Kenyan establishment and the paramilitary, the Kipkorir Mafia.

For those who are not experts in the Military Art, I find the Wikipedia entry quite illuminative of the reason I use the term; “Ricochets are a common danger of shooting because after bouncing off an object the bullet that ricochets poses an ‘unpredictable’ and serious danger to bystanders, animals, objects, or even the person who fired the shot” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricochet).

Mr. Donald Kipkorir - Gideon Moi’s Fraudulent Trustee

Simply put, Mr. Donald Kipkorir (known to have “looted Kenya” and then betrayed his boss, Gideon Moi, after having first cashed what was thought of as sufficient for his seemingly respectful firm - http://kenyanomics.blogspot.com/2007/08/gideon-moi-and-looting-of-kenya.html), in an article compiled to help re-invent the African History and Politics, suggests what would mathematically trigger the rise of an Islamic Republic of Eastern Africa.

In his far-fetched innuendo, the ignorant Kalenjin lawyer reveals the volatility and the fallacy of parts of the Kenyan establishment that have been tele-guided from other continents with respect to their next movement.

You may not be familiar with the Kalenjin people, who - Nilo-Saharan of origin - inhabit part of Kenya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalenjin_people), having migrated there from Ancient Ethiopia (today’s Sudan).

Being exposed to eventual reprisals from the part of a reputed as vindictive leader, like Gideon Moi, if he happens to consider you as a fraudulent trustee, means that you’ve got to find some strong backing. This is what Mr. Donald Kipkorir did, and he even threatens his former boss with ‘revelations’….

It’s not difficult; just search whose interests he defends.

In his article, the Kalenjin lawyer expresses his care for the lost swag, the captured (off the coast of Somalia) ship which was carrying 33 T-72 tanks, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns for the Kenyan army – which certainly does not need these weapons.

These are the strong backers of the lawless lawyer whose text – judged by specialists of International Law – is tantamount to the Law of the Jungle, and totally dishonoring of and defamatory for a human being.

You may consider the Kalenjin origin of the author as relevant of the jungle, but this is sheer western supremacism and racism; the Kalenjin are highly civilized and have kept among their religious traditions some of the most authentic Hamitic, Ancient Egyptian beliefs, namely the cult of Isis. As in the case of every nation, there are good Kalenjin and bad Kalenjin; in fact, Mr. Donald Kipkorir is the shame of the Kalenjin.

Not only is he the shame of the Nilo-Saharan nation, but he risks becoming the responsible for their forced Islamization.

As his bosses, the formidable and reviled Kikuyu generals of the pathetic Kenyan army, have been maddened because of the easy achievement of the Eyl Somali pirates, they ordered him to write in support of the illegal interests of the Kenyan militarists who will use the 33 T-72 tanks and the rocket-propelled grenades in the next face off with the Luos, the Somalis and the Oromos of Kenya.

Kenya is an English Colonial Fabrication

In fact, Kenya is not a nation, is not a state, and is not a society; it is an English colonial fabrication geared to destroy the Muslim community and political tradition in the East Coast of Africa. Large parts of Kenya, including the coast, are inhabited by Muslims, similarly with the Tanganyika coast and Zanzibar. All these Muslim populations have been ruled for many long centuries by various local rulers who exercised their power under the auspices of the Ottoman Sultan (and to lesser extent the Shah of Iran) and interacted peacefully with the Somalis, the Yemenites, and the Indians.

The evil colonial borderlines have been established according to an English – French plan that was set up in order to make of the Eastern African Muslim majority a minority residing within irrelevant and fabricated realms like Tanzania and Kenya. Disconnected from the Somalis, the East African Muslims became a minority in each fake colonial state, and were deliberately marginalized. The other African nations, who were forced to be part of these fake states, had been in harmonious terms with the coastal Muslims who for more than a millennium did not express any concern to islamize the African inlanders, as most of them worshipped God through monotheistic concepts. The conflicts started when all the different components were forced by the monstrous colonial elites of England and France to live within a state that they never conceived or needed.

The present article is not a point by point refutation of the fallacious suggestions of the bribed and lawless lawyer of the Kikuyu Kenyan paramilitary. It only consists in a revelation of the prevailing panic among Mr. Donald Kipkorir’s backers and the elucidation of their despair.

Their panic and despair are highlighted by Mr. Donald Kipkorir’s proposals that Kenya and Abyssinia (fallaciously re-baptized ‘Ethiopia’) invade and divide Somalia.

Of course, generically speaking, anyone understands the scheme of two countries attacking and dividing a third; the typical case is Poland, attacked and divided among Prussia, Russia and Austria in the late 18th century. But by then, there was no International Law, practically speaking.

Donald Kipkorir: Utterly Gross

Today, it is utterly gross for a supposed lawyer to suggest something so directly opposite to the quintessence of the International Law. However, this is the least one can say about the panicked, fraudulent (ask Gideon Moi) and lawless Mr. Donald Kipkorir.

His suggestion comes at a moment the Abyssinian army admitted its defeat in Somalia and are about to abandon the Horn of Africa country, in an effort to better implement the racist Amhara and Tigray Monophysitic tyranny over the outright majority of the wretched and starving country (consisted of Amhara and Tigray Muslims, and Oromos, Ogadenis, Sidamas, Afars, Agaws, Kambaatas, Shekachos, Kaffas, Hadiyas, Gedeos, Wolayitas, Anuak, Shinasha, Berta and Gumuz who all total 82% of the country’s total population).

In fact, the Somalia expedition, combined with the ongoing Ogaden revolution, is about to bring the world’s most loathed and most bestial tyranny to total collapse.

The World’s Most Venerated Heroes of the 3rd Millennium

As if the Abyssinia lesson from Somalia were not enough, the panicked, fraudulent (ask Gideon Moi – always!) and lawless Mr. Donald Kipkorir suggests that the militarily impotent Kenya attempts to ….. invade the Somali south, which is the area of the world’s most venerated heroes of the 3rd millennium, the noble and brave Somali Liberation and Re-unification fighters, who already liberated Kismayu.

• - Does Mr. Donald Kipkorir expect to recuperate the 33 T-72 tanks, the rocket-propelled grenades and the anti-aircraft guns ordered by his bosses?

Too comical a question! Why? Ask the Eyl Somali pirates!

In fact, what Mr. Donald Kipkorir suggests, if materialized (which would be paranoid to attempt and impossible to achieve), would result in a dramatic increase of Muslim population in both, collapsing Abyssinia and ailing Kenya.

This increase of the Muslim population in both Kenya and Abyssinia (immediate consequence of Mr. Donald Kipkorir’s suggestions’ materialization) is not a mere matter of figures but an affair of radicalized and armed populations.

Islamic Republic of Eastern Africa

When the extremely well armed Somalis of the South will be “part of Kenya” (assuming always on the basis of the suggested bunkum), their fight for liberation of Somalia will be transformed into a struggle for the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Eastern Africa that will encompass Sudan, Eritrea, Abyssinia, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania, as it will be coordinated with the struggle of the Eastern and Northern Somalis (who would be annexed by Abyssinia - on the basis of the suggested bunkum), the Oromos, the Ogadenis, the Afars, the Amhara and Tigray Muslims, the Hadiyas, and all the Muslims of the Sudan.

Such the radicalization will be that, assuming that the suggestions of Mr. Donald Kipkorir are materialized, it would be a matter of less than 2 years for the Islamic Republic of Eastern Africa to rise.

As many suspect a plan for the rise of an Islamist regime to rise in the Middle East and confront Israel before 2012, Mr. Donald Kipkorir’s suggestions may simply reveal the plan’s provision for the southern wing of the Islamist empire.

Why Kenya and Ethiopia ought to annex and divide Somalia

Last month, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch, the world’s foremost investment banks, went bankrupt and we witnessed the financial chaos in the western capitals.

In the fog of international headlines on finding a financial bail-out in Washington, a rag-tag army of 50 semi-naked men on rickety boats captured a ship carrying 33 T-72 tanks, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-aircraft guns off the coast of Somalia.

The capture of mv Faina and the stalemated talks amid the surrounding American and Russian warships made me think that maybe this is the time to find a final solution to the Somali problem.

Since 1960, the country has been a lawless state that is a haven for terrorists and pirates. The pirates have told us the destination of the captured weaponry causing tension and panic in Washington, Nairobi and Khartoum.

If it is true that the final consignee was the government of Southern Sudan, as they allege, I will be on the same page with the Kibaki government for the first time.

I am a fervent supporter of a strategic foreign policy even if it attracts us enemies of such malevolent and despotic regimes as that of Khartoum.

Supporting the Southern Sudan government is in our long-term strategic interest and we should not shy from it. The truth of the matter is that as a Western ally, Kenya is an existential enemy of Arab countries, Sudan included.

Annexing Somalia is thus in our strategic interest and we must do it now as the financial meltdown continues to take away the attention of the world.

Somalia as a state exists only in world maps. It is a classic case of a failed state. It is a state dismembered into as many independent units as there are sub-clans. Its 90-strong cabinet is emblematic of the actual number of units.

The Horn of Africa country has no functioning government. The so-called transitional federal government, led by Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, is confined to a shell-shocked presidential compound.

There is no standing or even sitting army or judicial systems. By all accounts, Somalia is a black hole in international law. Together with Afghanistan and Pakistan they are known as the training grounds and refuge for international terrorism.

Kenya has been a victim of such terrorism, leading to near-destruction of its tourism industry. We cannot afford another such attack. We have the potential to develop our tourism to compete with, if not outpace, Egypt and South Africa. But we cannot do so if Somalia continues to be a non-state.

Somalia neighbours Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Of these, it is only Ethiopia and Kenya that have strategic interest in Somalia. Djibouti is a primitive entrepot that can’t even supply water to its 600,000 people, who are forced to drink that imported from France or Coca Cola. Therefore, Djibouti is out in the quest for the final solution to the Somali puzzle.

Kenya and Ethiopia must and ought to dismember Somalia and divide it between themselves along the 4 degrees latitude, each taking all the land below and above the line.

The division will make both countries extend their territories by roughly 300,000sq km and additional populations of about five million.

Once Kenya and Ethiopia have sent their combined army to Somalia and declared the annexation, we will present to the world a fait accompli.

In 1845, America annexed Texas from Mexico and forced the Texan legislature to pass a specific legislation stating that it accepted the annexation. The annexation has stood to date and, for good measure, President George W. Bush is a proud American Texan.

For Kenya and Ethiopia, having the Somali legislature to endorse the annexation will be cake-walk. At any given time, most, if not all, Somali legislators are in Nairobi.

We will have them convene in one of our hotels and to pass the appropriate statutes dividing their country.

When the allied forces liberated Germany from Fuhrer Adolf Hitler, they sent the bill to Berlin.

Our cost of annexing Somalia will be settled by Mogadishu. Somalia is known to have huge deposits of oil, natural gas, uranium and iron ore. Immediately after the annexation, we will invite our strategic foreign friends (not China please) to come and exploit the resources for us.

Kenyans ought to know that although Somalia is a failed state, its positive statistics are impressive. Without a structured economy, its gross national income per capita is US$600 (Sh40,000), when ours is $550 (Sh36,800). Of its universities that operate without budgets and with armed militia guarding them, three are in Africa’s top 100.

International law forbids the use of force by states against the territorial integrity and political independence of others. Somalia doesn’t have either.

But the law also recognises irreversible processes like the extinction of states such as in the USSR, emergence of new states from former USSR and Yugoslavia, and annexations like that of Texas. International order hates reversing completed processes, more so if the world is a better place.

If we do not annex Somalia and now, we will be a victim of its failed status and pulled down by it. We will not be able to achieve our strategic foreign policy in the region, or attain the Vision 2030 goal.

The time to annex and dismember Somalia is now; Washington and Moscow will be grateful.

‘Water-Boarding’ Kenyan terror suspects and how they were flown out of Kenya

Details on how 19 terror suspects arrested in Kenya, but removed from police custody by foreign security agents for interrogation can be revealed today.

Interrogation by the foreign agents — including US’ Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and Britain’s MI6 — have been described as “most inhumane” and involved blindfolding suspects, shackling their feet and handcuffing them from the back.

   Arrest Bush - A War Criminal!
According to a report by a presidential committee exclusively obtained by The Standard, the case of one detainee, Amir Mohamed, stands out as an example how foreign agents could easily access and remove suspects from police custody in various stations.

Mohamed was taken out of his cell at Nairobi’s Kileleshwa Police Station by American agents in a US registered vehicle and taken to a local hotel for interrogation.

When contacted, Government Spokesman Alfred Mutua asked: “What is the report saying?”

After consulting the Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura, Dr Mutua said the Government had not received the final report.

However, Mutua said they were aware of the committee’s “rough draft” whose content not all members were agreed on.

He said the committee was asked to make the report more accurate.

“The committee is still refining it (report) to try and come up with a more accurate document,” he said.

The Presidential Special Action Committee appointed last year to address specific concerns of the Muslim community received reports that the foreign agents had direct access to prisoners without restraint.

The report was to be handed over to the President on March 31, but to date it is yet to be received at State House.

The committee received reports from the Muslim Human Rights Forum, which witnessed Mohamed being brought back to Kileleshwa from an interrogation session on February 5, last year, in a US Embassy vehicle.

The detainee confirmed to the human rights’ group that he was interrogated by FBI agents about possible links with Al–Qaeda training military camps in Mogadishu, Somalia.

Another detainee, Mohammad Ezzouek, said he was interrogated by British intelligence agents at Kileleshwa Police Station between February 3 and 5 last year.

The human rights’ group also reported that during a fact-finding mission to Kiunga, Lamu District, the residents reported seeing foreign security personnel together with Kenyan security forces in the hunt for people fleeing Somalia and seeking refuge in Kenya.

One Abdulmalik Mohamed, said to be a Kenyan citizen and suspected of being involved in the bombing of Paradise Hotel in Mombasa, was arrested in Kenya and handed to foreign agents who flew him to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after being held in custody in Mombasa and Nairobi.

The report quotes a statement by the US Department of Defence on March 26, 2006, indicating that Abdulmalik had admitted his involvement in terrorist attacks in Mombasa in 2002 and the US Embassy bombings in Nairobi in 1998.

One suspect who appeared before the committee, Fatma Ahmed Chande, a Tanzania national married to a Kenyan, narrated her ordeal as she and her husband, Salim Awadh Salim, were fleeing from Somalia.

“It was so chilly and drizzling. We were bundled into pick ups and driven to the runway. I saw very many people, including women, kneeling,” said Chande.

“The men were blindfolded and their hands handcuffed behind their backs and feet chained. I was led to the group of women and ordered to kneel, too,” said Chande.

She added: “An armed man came to me and pulled down my veil to uncover my face. Some of the detainees were crying loudly. The men had black hoods covering their heads. We knelt for some time, till our knees ached. We were taken to the plane, still blindfolded. I could, however, see through my veil as it was of light material. It was very scaring, cold and wet.”

According to the committee, Chande’s statement confirms the report by the human rights’ group that her husband, Salim, said to be Kenyan, was moved to Ethiopia, where he is still held.

The committee received reports that on March 31, last year, heavily armed police officers cordoned off a residential area in Kongowea, Mombasa, and harassed everyone in sight as they sought terror suspects.

After the ordeal, the officers arrested two people and later released them without charges.

On the night of April 24-25, last year, heavily armed hooded ATPU personnel raided Guraya in Mombasa.

Again, they cordoned off the area and blocked the adjacent Jomo Kenyatta highway, and proceeded to break doors at homes and paraded residents, including children and the elderly, in the rain at 3am.

It was alleged that the police ransacked their homes and took away valuables and cash, arrested 11 residents, 10 of who were later released without charges, while one was deported to the Comoros.

The committee also heard from Noor Sheikh Hassan, also said to be a Kenyan citizen who, together with five others, was arrested in Liboi, a town on the Kenya-Somali border on January 6, last year, and transferred to Langata Police Station in Nairobi, where he was held in solitary confinement for 25 days.

He was denied access to a lawyer and family members and could not make any phone call.

As of today, none of the arrests have yielded any prosecution for crimes connected with terrorism.

The report adds that some of those arrested were later released without charges whereas others were prosecuted for minor immigration offences and deported.

“The rendition of the terror suspects is illegal under the Constitution and international law because it disregards judicial and administrative processes,” says the report.

Most Kenyan victims of “rendition” were arrested and detained, while others were abducted and denied legal representation.

The committee notes that rendition violates other human rights: For instance, victims of rendition have no opportunity to challenge their detention, or the arbitrary decision to transfer them to another country.

The Kenyan security agents have continued to defend themselves over the rendition, saying those taken to foreign countries were not Kenyans

The committee, however, claims to have received evidence of the rendition of at least 19 Kenyans to Ethiopia, Somalia and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Flight manifests made available to the committee show that in January and February last year, chartered planes left Nairobi with about 80 people on board to the Somali capital Mogadishu and the town of Baidoa. They were suspected to have links with Al-Qaeda.

The flights left at night, and the manifests appear to have omitted important details.

The 19 were Aden Sheikh Abdullahi, Saidi Shifa, Salam Ngama, Bashir Hussein Chirag Mohammed Sader, Said Hamisi Mohamed, Swaleh Ali Tunza, Hassan Shaban Mwazume, Hussein Ali Said, Tsuma Solomon Adam Ayila, Abdi Muhammed Abdillahi, Salim Awadh Salim, Abdulrashid Mohamed, Kasim Musa Mwarusi, Ali Musa Mwarusi, Abdallah Halifan Tondwe, Nasru Tuko, Mohammed Said Mohamed, Saqaawi Diin (all in Ethiopia) and Wahab Mohamed Abdulmalik (Guatanamo bay, Cuba).

Muslim Human Rights Forum reported to the committee that it had filed 34 applications at the High Court in Nairobi, while six others were filed in Mombasa.

Despite High Court orders in all the cases, the State defied, and only released two suspects, while the rest were moved to foreign jurisdictions.

Obama has consistently stated that he wants the U.S. to start withdrawing from Iraq for re-deployment in Afghanistan within sixteen months.

As Obama landed in Afghanistan today, the German magazine newspaper “Der Spiegel” reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told them that he supported Barack Obama’s proposal that U.S. troops should leave Iraq within 16 months, essentially endorsing Obama, and slapping Bush upside the head.

al-Maliki said: “U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.”

Asked if he supported Obama’s ideas more than those of John McCain, Republican presidential hopeful, Maliki said he did not want to recommend who people should vote for….”Whoever is thinking about the shorter term is closer to reality. Artificially extending the stay of U.S. troops would cause problems.”

Meanwhile, the White House said on Friday George W. Bush and Maliki had agreed that a security deal under negotiation should set a “time horizon” for meeting “aspirational goals” for reducing U.S. forces in Iraq.

In a speech earlier this week, Obama promised to commit at least two more combat brigades - up to 10,000 men - to Afghanistan, if he wins November’s election. He also said the US military should focus on that country rather than Iraq.

Copycat McCain upped the ante — to 3 brigades. Asked where he would get the troops while bogged in his “100 year Iraq war,” McCain said: “We need to work that out. We need to have greater participation on the part of our NATO allies, as I said in my opening remarks today and we need a lot more help.”

NATO Allies? You mean your cousins in Great Britain?

To the best of my knowledge the Brits are not thrilled at all with this illegal war.

In a campaign stop McCain said: “I know how to win wars. And if I’m elected president, I will turn around the war in Afghanistan, just as we have turned around the war in Iraq.”

And my question is: Which WAR has McCain ever won?

Being caged like an animal in Vietnam — another illegal war that America lost, is not winning, in my opinion.

In Vietnam 2,000,000+ civilian lives were lost, most from South Vietnam. 58,000+ American soldiers also lost their lives in the war.

Just like in Iraq, U.S. military personnel often went on civilian killing rampages — For example:

The Vietnam war started because American president Eisenhower did not want “communism to spread throughout the world” and eventually to America. Essentially the U.S. was asked by France, via NATO, to keep the communists from “taking over” the French “Colonial” Territory — Vietnam. What can I say, other than repeat what I have posted in this blog a thousand times: Black ReTHUGliTOMS demean blackness, hopelessly.

Today, it is pretty clear that African American interests are “better” served by the Democrats than the Republicans.

It is also true that Democrats have supported vicious confederate slavery in the yester years, but they, to a large extent rectified this in the sixties, beginning with the presidencies of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson.

Some Democratic legislators from the southern epicenters of White Racism opposed President Johnson’s Civil Rights Act of 1964, due to “KKK Hangover,” but most did support it. This Act drove a significant number of white voters away from the Democratic Party, and the Republicans instead of joining with the Democrats to reform America, pounced on the opportunity — grabbing the “Southern Vote” a.k.a the “Bigot-Vote.”

Up to date, the Democratic Party has a far much better Civil Rights record than the Republican Party, for without the “Bigot-Vote,” the Republican party has no footing.

Consequently, race-baiting smothered in fear-mongering became a staple of the modern Republican Party.

Republicans, and in this instance ReTHUGliTOMS like “re-living the past,” oblivious of the fact that modern Republicanism is just a new name for pre-sixties “Dixie-Cratism,” ….spun around, modernized and “Stealthified.”

The “Bigot-Vote” is the main-stay of the Republican Party, and they pander to it incessantly, with the help of the “putrid dung” excreted by Talk-Radio (Rush Limbaugh and Co.) and Fox News (O’reilly, Hannity and Co.)….to name a few of these vicious hyenas.

Hillary Clinton tried to dip her filthy finger into the “Bigot-Pot,” failed and got beaten by a “Black Man,” called Barack Obama.

And why is Obama “Black” and NOT “White” — for he is an offspring of the union of a white mother and a black father.

Simple answer: RACISM — perpetrated by “some” Democrats and a “large majority” of Republicans.

Evolutionary Scientist Richard Dawkins states: “It is the height of injustice to think of a person as “black” just because his blood is “tainted” with “black,” whereas, if “taint” is what it is, then his blood is equally tainted with “white,” in which case, he equally qualifies also as white. Depending on your view, it could be a matter of who is the “lesser of two evils.” ….Republicans or Democrats?

To me the Republican party is “super-evil.”

I won’t pen the language I am tempted to use, because someone else offers a more eloquent and “tighter summary” of what the ReTHUGlican Party represents:

Nuclear weapons are symbols of military strength. Until 1998, these weapons were a monopoly of the already politically powerful five permanent members of the UN Security Council. Those who are outgunned are sometimes forced to resort to terrorist tactics.

Terrorism is an instrument of the weak and it has been largely associated with Muslims. Yet, the Muslim world has been deliberately denied nuclear capability more systematically than any other part of the world. Indeed, no other part of the world has paid a bigger price for aspiring to go nuclear than the Muslim world.

In 1981, Israel destroyed Iraq’s nuclear reactor. After the Gulf War in early 1990s, Iraq was also hounded about its nuclear, chemical and biological capabilities. The Anglo-American invasion followed in 2003.

Likewise, Pakistan was subjected to economic sanctions by the US because of its nuclear programs long before detonation of its devices in May 1998.

Until then, when others attempted to go nuclear, the US used a combination of carrot and stick to influence their behavior.

The stick is applied more in the Muslim world. Libya and Iran have been repeatedly warned of dire consequences if ever they attempted to go nuclear.

Two partitions in the 20th century profoundly affected the Muslim world. A 1947 partition paved way for formation of new Muslim country: Pakistan. The other partition, in 1948, created a new adversary to the Muslim world: Israel. Both Israel and Pakistan were affected by the nuclear factor.

Israel was created three years after the American nuclear detonation on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Before long, Israel also asserted a monopoly of nuclear power in the Middle East. And when Pakistan sensed that India had the weapon; it decided to also possess the weapon as deterrence.

Pakistan at last detonated a device. It could use the Islamic card subtly. There were countries in the West that were prepared to help Pakistan against acute economic sanctions. Their advice was that westerners should avoid driving Pakistan into the embrace of the Muslim world.

France’s President Jacques Chiraq for example insisted that, if Pakistan was pushed too far, it could become too dependent on the Muslim world. If it needed economic assistance from the Muslim world, what could it offer in return? Technology. That know-how could ultimately include nuclear technology.

Kwame Nkrumah once asserted Africa’s right to participate in a world of nuclear energy. In 1979, I too speculated about an African nuclear challenge, including a future Nigeria, a future South Africa and conceivably even a future Zaire.

Since my 1979, speculation in the BBC Reith lectures, Nigeria and Zaire have regressed from being potential nuclear powers. Their respective infrastructures have degenerated dismally, and so much of their scientific talent has been brain drained.

For South Africa, as soon as the bomb was in danger of falling into Black hands, FW De Klerk, and later Nelson Mandela, were coaxed into signing the Nuclear Weapons Nonproliferation Treaty.

Clearly, my 1979 proposal for a nuclearised Africa are now further away from fulfillment. Nonetheless, in this new millennium, it is fitting to re-open the question as to whether to accept the global status quo. The issue is pressing given that India and Pakistan are now nuclear states and raging confrontations have arisen regarding North Korea and Iran.

As I saw the issue in 1979, and has continued to be expressed by others as such since, the world nuclear situation is a kind of apartheid. We have five Nuclear Haves, who are under no pressure to give up their arsenals of mass destruction weapons. Then there are nuclear Have-nots who are punished when they show nuclear aspirations.

My view is still that some degree of proliferation may shock the five principal nuclear powers out of their complacency. Such proliferation would convince them that the current system of a few select nuclear powers cannot be forever sustained. Therefore, we should aim for global nuclear disarmament, universal and total renunciation of those evil weapons for everybody. When that is done, we can then try to establish a system of monitoring that would apply evenly to everybody.

There is no reason, for example, why one military alliance, NATO, should have three nuclear powers. Can the US and the UK ever be on opposite sides of a war? Yet, the US, the Britain and France are in one military alliance, and each of them insists of keeping those weapons. Yet, they have the arrogance to tell others that they cannot have them.

Four Christian countries and one Confucian-Marxist power have asserted nuclear monopoly. There is an additional Jewish state in the Middle East that is permitted to have weapons of mass destruction, and the US shows indifference. And in 2003 the same America undertook to bomb Iraq to smithereens for ‘alleged’ same offense.

Unless you have a system that secures people on equal terms, what is to prevent the next government of Iraq from developing nuclear capability, short of permanently colonising it? The genie is already out of the bottle. How do you get it back?

In the final analysis, nuclear monopoly is severely challenged in South Asia. A much needed crack has been created in the nuclear apartheid system, a system that is not sustainable any way. Nuclear weapons are evil. They ought to be abolished; but for everybody. As long as they are possessed by anyone, it will be legitimate for others to aspire for them.

Globally today, there are weapons that can kill hundreds of thousands of people and potentially millions of people. The main disagreement is whether these weapons should be abolished altogether. And if it is the case that they should, how do we set about convincing the Nuclear Haves that these weapons should go?

I remain convinced that we cannot persuade the North to disarm unless there is some degree of transient nuclear proliferation to persuade them that universal nuclear disarmament is the only solution.
