Post Tucson Massacre: Malignant Narcissist — Sarah Palin’s Presidential Candidacy Is Over!

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

   [ By: Mark Green ]
Mark GreenPalin’s ‘Brainwashing‘ and ‘Joe Welch‘ Moment: Sarah Palin has lived by the sword. Her weapon is the nasty, snide attack — on Obama for “paling around with terrorists,” on all liberals as un-American, on critics as “limp, impotent [members of] of the old boys club” who lack “cajones.” Her brand is all about being an Annie Oakley to the hard right via all her Tweets and Facebook pages and bird whistle.

And a chunk of the Republican base who think Obama’s a Marsian have gone for it. Even goofs like “refudiate” or writing on her hand have been dismissed as proof of a conspiracy of elitists out to get “a hockey Mom from Wasilla.” Jonathan Martin of Politico wrote last week before the shootings and “blood libel” that Sarah Palin “has to decide if she wants to be Ronald Reagan or Rush Limbaugh.” She’s not going to be either.

The context is clear — America will elect people from different parties but what Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43 and Obama all had in common was that they either ran on or in fact were unifying figures who didn’t hate others. Palin is the most divisive national political figure of my lifetime. Because she has not shown any of the experience, intellect, character or temperament to be a serious presidential contender — and because Republican leaders are not politically stupid — she has now officially been destroyed as a serious candidate not by the “lamestream” media but by herself. She’s her own worst enemy.

————————————————————————–

After the President’s remarks in Tucson, ideally the public conversation will be elevated to focus more on serious issues after the tragedy last Saturday — how can we help the mentally ill before they hurt themselves or us? How can we craft gun control laws to keep semi-automatics away from troubled or politically motivated people? How can the public and officials “debate without hate”?

But as of today, there has been one political ramification of note — Sarah Palin is done as a presidential candidate. After her video disparaging critics as guilty of a “blood libel,” she should be shunned and will be shunned. As John Kenneth Galbraith said of Black Monday in 1929, “the end had come but was not yet in sight.”

Everyone in public life, given enough time, will misspeak, stumble, say something foolish. But the public and peers will hold it against them only if it betrays a larger unpleasant reality.

So when President Obama said as a candidate that there were “57 states” or once teased the Special Olympics, he quickly corrected himself and apologized for a brain burp. Whatever one’s politics, it’s hard to deny that he’s a person of enormous intelligence who makes few such mistakes. No pattern. No betrayal. No harm.

But when Senator Joe McCarthy tried to smear a young associate of opposing council Joseph Welch in the June, 1954 Army-McCarthy Hearings, the folksy Welch said in his now epic retort, “Have you no decency sir? At long last, have you sense of decency?” It was later regarded as the beginning of the end for someone who was a hateful liar.

Then in 1968, Governor George Romney, an honorable man thought of a something of a light-weight, committed the gaffe of truth (a nod to Michael Kinsley) when he said that he had been wrong about the Vietnam War because he had been “brainwashed” by the generals during a visit there. That’s a permissible and understandable flub for a journalist or pundit but not apparently a president. It may have been unfair but, in the it-ain’t-beanbag world of presidential politics, he cashiered himself out of contention.

Now comes Sarah Palin who has lived by the sword. Her weapon is the nasty, snide attack — on Obama for “paling around with terrorists,” on all liberals as un-American, on critics as “limp, impotent [members of] of the old boys club” who lack “cajones.”

Her brand was all about being an Annie Oakley to the hard right via all her Tweets and Facebook pages and bird whistle. And a chunk of the Republican base who think Obama’s a Marsian went for it. Even goofs like “refudiate” or writing on her hand were dismissed as proof of a conspiracy of elitists out to get “a hockey Mom from Wasilla.”

Reverse sexism and victimization were working. There were nice cover articles in the New York Times Magazine and Time. But questions were in the air.

Then, eerily and presciently and tragically, Rep. Giffords herself three months ago chided Palin by name for the now famous graphic targeting the Arizona congresswoman for defeat using the crosshairs of a gun. A Palin aide explained that the huntswomen was only using the graphics of a map, but Palin herself had called the images “bullseyes.”

Of course legally and morally Sarah Palin is not responsible for the shooting on Saturday. But of course she has contributed to a climate of intolerance that turns opponents into enemies of the state, that indicts all Muslims for the acts of some — a modern McCarthy is what I called her on this site in the context of the Park51 controversy last August. Given her reality and imagery, she was a literal tail-gunner. Still, as the Atlanta Constitution’s Cynthia Tucker urged on Hardball two days ago, she could have yesterday said a version of, I regret that imagery and some of my words and will be more careful in the future. Is there a major public official who hasn’t done that?

Instead, we have “blood libel,” a reference to the calumny that Jews had used the blood of Christian children to make matzoh during Passover. Could there have been a more offensive comment than using an anti-Semitic image, with the word blood no less, in the context of a Jewish congresswoman fighting to survive and recover from being shot in the head? Even without the religious overtones, a video that made her into the victim using Palin-like violent metaphors was exactly what the occasion didn’t call for.

Perhaps she didn’t fully know the meaning. Perhaps she was needlessly defensive or was ill-advised. Perhaps the conservative punditocracy will again find some Democratic Tom, Dick or Harry who once used the phrase in order to exonerate her now.

But that dog won’t hunt because the context is clear. America will elect people from different parties but what Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, Bush 43 and Obama all had in common was that they either ran on or in fact were unifying figures who didn’t hate others.

Jonathan Martin of Politico wrote last week before the shootings and “blood libel” that Sarah Palin “has to decide if she wants to be Ronald Reagan or Rush Limbaugh.” She’s not going to be either.

The GOP Psycho RoundUp: Sean KLANnity Gushes Over New Jersey Governor Chris FAT Christie; WAR CRIMINAL Karl Rove on Obama and Immigration; UNTIE-Tom Deneen Borelli Insults Bill Clinton!

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Last night, Fox’s syphilitic LIAR, Sean Hannity oscillated between gushing over New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie and falsely claiming that “it only took 72 days” for Obama administration to accept international assistance with oil spill.

In a June 23 post, FactCheck.org reported that contrary to right-wing media claims, “international assistance has been accepted.” From FactCheck.org:

Also, contrary to reports such as the one on “Fox & Friends,” international assistance has been accepted. To date, 25 countries and four international organizations have offered support in the form of skimming vessels, containment and fire boom, technical assistance and response solutions, among others. A chart provided by the State Department shows that as of June 23 five offers had been accepted and 50 were under consideration — including multiple offers from a single country or entity. One offer had been declined: France offered a chemical dispersant that is not approved for use in the United States.

CPAC 2010 ‘Hyena’ Finale: ‘Rodeo clown’ Beck declares, ‘America is not a clown show,’…’sometimes O.J. Simpson gets away with it’

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

From The Daily Beast: Glenn Beck’s closing keynote to CPAC was a rambling culmination of the conference themes–a unified field theory of political philosophy that could be boiled down to this bumper sticker: Everything Bad in America is the Progressives’ Fault. Glenn Beck declared war on “the cancer of progressivism” tonight–and traced its persistent rot back to any twentieth century U.S. President not named Coolidge or Reagan. In Bad Beck’s worldview, there’s not much room for civic debate between conservatives and progressives. It sounds like its time for a pogrom. [ READ MORE ]

CPAC 2010, the yearly Republican HATE-FEST came to an end Saturday, with hate-monger, Glenn Beck, suggesting that the LIBERAL MINORITY has hijacked America, and that the most hated man in America — the fat bloke WHO ATE THE GOP, is his hero!

Obviously referring to the election of a black man, Obama, to the presidency, Beck said:We need an understanding that life is not fair … sometimes O.J. Simpson gets away with it.”

Glenn Beck -- BatShit Insane

Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh, the “defender of Motherhood” was overheard in his radio show, on Friday, saying: “Republicans are ‘probably all waiting for my next leadership step to see where I’m going to take them.’ LOL!

America’s Idi Amin began his Friday show as follows: “Greetings to you… philanderers, mistresses, porn stars all across the fruited plain.” Commenting on Tiger Woods’ audience of family, friends, supporters, and press, Rush asked, “did they not want to put any attractive women in the front row just as a safety precaution?

Limbaugh then went on to compare the male and female media figures’ responses to Woods’ apology, stating that the female response is “vicious,” concluding that he was “more fascinated by [the different reactions] than I am about what I thought about this.” And that says something. Clinton derangement syndrome, North Korean strain

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Sufferers of this incurable illness twist Bill Clinton’s moving rescue of two journalists into something ugly. Gordon Liddy, the demented felon and radio bigot cackled about “Ling Ling and Wee Wee being locked up for nine hours in an airplane with Bill Clinton.” Rush Limbaugh, the obsessive guttersnipe wondered aloud whether Clinton “hit on those two female journalists on the long flight home,” and Andrea Peyser, the curdled tabloid columnist insisted that the whole shebang was nakedly scripted and staged as a device to help rehabilitate the image of former President Bill Clinton.

   By: Joe Conason
Joe ConasonLike a seasonal flu, the verbal virus that is sometimes called Clinton derangement syndrome has struck again, beginning only moments after the 42nd president of the United States appeared on television screens around the world with the two journalists he had helped to rescue from prison in North Korea. And like certain viruses, the syndrome tends to hit hardest among a very specific segment of the population. Most Americans appear to be immune most of the time, as do the majority of human beings on the planet, so this pathology will probably never become a global pandemic.

But pundits everywhere — from the newsrooms of the “liberal media” to the blogosphere to the Republican noise machine — seem to be the preferred hosts of the pathogen. While not lethal or physically disabling, it troubles their minds — and strikes the same people over and over and over again. Symptoms include the recitation of dull sexual japes, sour reflections on celebrity, mindless pronouncements on foreign policy, false accusations of grandstanding, and even furious attacks on innocent individuals who dare to express admiration or gratitude to Bill Clinton (on this particular occasion for saving their lives).

On display in the wake of his successful effort to secure the release of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee is the purest and most virulent form of a disorder all too familiar to anyone who lived through the Clinton presidency.

Here was an effort that exemplified the best of America — a society that values the lives of its citizens enough to send a former head of state, with all the power of government behind him, to the aid of two women in distress. Here was a happy reunion, bringing wives home to their husbands and a mother back to her little girl, that surely uplifted the spirit of anyone who actually believes in family values. Here was a moment of pride and joy.

But not for Gordon Liddy, the demented felon and radio bigot who cackled about “Ling Ling and Wee Wee being locked up for nine hours in an airplane with Bill Clinton.” Not for Rush Limbaugh, the obsessive guttersnipe who wondered aloud whether Clinton “hit on those two female journalists on the long flight home.” Not for Andrea Peyser, the curdled tabloid columnist who insisted that “the whole shebang was nakedly scripted and staged as a device to help rehabilitate the image of former President Bill Clinton” (and who neglected to mention that Clinton did not speak to the eagerly waiting press corps and has given not a single interview on the North Korea mission). Not for Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who predictably seized on Clinton’s mission as an opportunity for gratuitous and ugly insults to his wife, weirdly imagining that the prisoner release was “some clever North Korean revenge plot, giving the limelight to Daddy to punish Mommy.” And not for the editors of the Huffington Post, who posted a very strange headline — “Bill Upstages Hillary … Once Again” — on an Associated Press story that didn?t mention her at all.

On Greta, Eagleburger chides Fox coverage of Clinton’s North Korea visit: “I thought they were going to wet their pants”

Analysts have long speculated on the sexual envy that may or may not predispose the syndrome’s sufferers to say these things. What seems clear, however, is that no matter what humanitarian acts Clinton may perform in his post-presidency, he cannot do anything without provoking such inappropriate and embarrassing outbursts. The result, of course, is that their remarks always reveal more about them than about their intended target.

Consider the reaction of the former president’s former advisor Dick Morris, who still pontificates on the Fox News Channel airwaves as a Clinton expert, although he hasn’t spoken with either of them for more than 10 years. Denouncing Clinton’s trip as “awful” and “ridiculous,” he suggested with a sickening grin that Ling and Lee should instead have been left to “live with the consequences of their acts” — essentially a death sentence in a hard labor camp. (Is that what any Fox commentator would say in the unlikely event that any of their colleagues had the guts to try to report on life in North Korea — and got arrested?)

John Podhoretz didn’t go quite that far in Commentary, but he too felt deeply disturbed by Clinton’s achievement. As a “journalist” who spends most of his life watching television and eating ice cream, he felt moved to mock Ling and Lee for seeking to expose the dark side of the North Korean regime — and to throw in a few bitter words about Al Gore for employing them at Current TV. If that sounds bizarre coming from a self-styled hard-liner, it is simply another symptom of the mental imbalance induced in some people by the sight of Clinton (and Gore).

Finally there are the “serious” commentators, most notably former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, the former diplomat best known for disdaining diplomacy and rattling the atomic saber until he was mercifully relieved of public responsibilities. In him the syndrome’s most noticeable effect is a severe case of amnesia. On the pages of the Washington Post, he complained that despite “decades of bipartisan U.S. rhetoric about not negotiating with terrorists for the release of hostages, it seems that the Obama administration not only chose to negotiate, but to send a former president to do so.” Leaving aside the question of whether this situation in any way fits that description, Bolton has clearly forgotten the Iran-Contra affair, when his colleagues in the Reagan administration, all the way up to and including the president, negotiated with Iran’s leaders to release hostages in exchange for deadly missiles — violating statute and policy. He also seems to have forgotten how he tried to help cover up that outrage as an assistant attorney general.

But perhaps this latest outbreak should be considered mild, when compared with the devastating episodes of years past. Nobody is claiming that Clinton murdered or drugged anyone on his trip to Korea, that he profited by selling a real estate parcel there, or that he is a secret agent of the Dear Leader.

They’re saving all that for Barack Obama.
