John McCain announced that he was running for president to confront the "transcendent challenge" of the 21st century, "radical Islamic extremism," contrasting it with "stability, tolerance and democracy." But the values of his handpicked running mate, Sarah Palin, more resemble those of Muslim fundamentalists than they do those of the Founding Fathers. On censorship, the teaching of creationism in schools, reproductive rights, attributing government policy to God’s will and climate change, Palin agrees with Hamas and Saudi Arabia rather than supporting tolerance and democratic precepts. What is the difference between Palin and a Muslim fundamentalist? Lipstick. ….[ more ]

Pat Robertson -- An Agent of Intolerance

On the Republican “Fundamentalist Intolerance” Mouthpiece — ‘FOX Noise‘:

Asked on Fox & Friends about the “damage done” by having Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews anchor MSNBC’s election coverage, the Media Research Center’s Tim Graham responded, “Not only is the damage already done, the damage continues. I mean, not only are they keeping these people on for an hour a night, they’re adding this lesbian Air America radio host, Rachel Maddow, on every night.”

Editorial Review — From Booklist: Bageant mixes a reporter’s keen analysis, a storyteller’s color, and a native son’s love of his roots in this absorbing dissection of America’s working poor.

Deer Hunting with Jesus: Dispatches from America's Class WarReturning to his hometown of Winchester, Virginia, after 30 years of life among the elite journalistic class, Bageant sought to answer the question of why the working poor vote for Republicans in apparent opposition to their own interests.

On a broader level, he examines issues of economic class distinctions as he drills below the middle-class claims of his hometown.

The reality is that two of five residents do not have high-school diplomas and virtually everyone over 50 has serious health problems in a town—and nation—with poor and failing schools and health systems.

Still clinging to illusions of personal responsibility and the vain hope of someday achieving wealth, Winchester’s residents fall deeper into debt, farther behind in ambitions beyond working in the local factory—if they’re lucky—and, along with their children, subject to the de facto draft of economic conscription.

Through the lives of his friends and family, Bageant explores the importance of hunting, religion, and redneck pride in what he describes as the “American hologram.” A wise, tender, and acerbic look at life among America’s working poor. ……[ More Reviews ]

McCain the Fighter

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

 Columnist - John Sammon
Columnist - John Sammon. Click to view larger picture. The original scenario at the Republican Convention had John McCain standing before a giant computer generated digital movie screen, the latest high tech technology, showing a gigantic American flag, a giant crucifix, as well as an apple pie cooling on a windowsill, and a photo montage of an elderly woman (symbolizing the flag, religion, mother and apple pie).

All American themes. The pie, mother, and the crucifix were eliminated at the last moment when it was decided by campaign strategists that this was laying on the sanctimony a little too thick.

The announcer, sounding pious, reverential, solemn in an almost choking voice like it was the most important thing that ever happened, was to then read from a prepared text.

“John McCain is a fighter. He decided he was going to be a fighter at birth. He fought to come into this world. He fought for you in Vietnam, and now he’s going to be fighting for you in the White House.”

The spectators scream, yell and applaud.

“Many years ago, John McCain learned that life requires you to fight. He was standing on the deck of the Battleship Cornblatt with his war hero uncle, and the clouds parted and the sunlight shone upon him, and he was heard to say, ’some day, I’ll make this world a place to be worthy, but I’ll fight for the right.’

John McCain knows he’s a fighter.

He knows God. And he fights alongside God.

He’s the candidate for change. McCain supported President Bush in Iraq.

McCain is for change.

(Applause)

McCain supported Bush on immigration (guest worker program). McCain is for change.

McCain is against the Kyoto (global warming) Treaty. So is Bush.

McCain is for change.

(Wild applause).

McCain supports illegal wiretaps. So does Bush.

(Manic applause).

McCain is for change.

McCain is for the educational program, Every Child Left Behind. So is Bush.

They also agree mostly on health care, Medicare, taxes, abortion and trade.

McCain is for change.

But he isn’t afraid to fight.

John McCain isn’t slow to make the tough choices because John McCain understands you have to fight, and fight hard.”

A montage of heavily armed jet aircraft sweeps across the movie screen as a thrilling crescendo musical interlude of violins and harps, sounding literally like music from heaven, fills our ears.

The announcer piously resumes: “John McCain has fought. All his life he has fought. He fought for you back then (Vietnam), and he’ll fight for you now.

You see, destiny calls upon one special man each millennium to lead his people into the Promised Land. Pulling us into the future. Into our destiny. Our legacy. Destiny is only known to a very few. A select few. Courageous enough, bold enough. John McCain is one of those men. Very once in a great while, a great man appears whose greatness reflects upon us, that embodies the superior spirit of America, the supreme greatness of America alone among nations, the right, the duty, of America to lead, to teach, to uplift, to dominate, to spread itself across the globe.

Duty, country, family!

Only a man who is a fighter can know such a vision. A man who has fought. John McCain. John McCain loves his country. John McCain is his country. John McCain fights for his country.

John McCain will fight alongside you.”

The script (the version you saw on TV) was altered slightly when campaign strategists decided at the last moment they wanted to make McCain appear slightly more a man of the people.

Republican Rick Warren - Just Another Biased Right-Wing ‘God-Profiteer’

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I watched last Saturday’s “forum on faith” at the Saddleback Church in California, hosted Rev. Rick Warren, and it was pretty obvious that McCain, who was questioned after Obama had an unfair advantage.

McCain got some notice that Obama did not.

NBC political reporter Andrea Mitchell reported Sunday that Obama aides thought McCain “may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama.”

She was right.

A Republican pastor plus his “God-Smooching” crowd…..Please!

The so-called evangelicals follow some of the most racist and bigoted Ministers (pastors) in the United States, who freely God's Profits: Faith, Fraud, and the Republican Crusade for Values Votersadvocate American wars based on Biblical mandates, rant hatefully against Islam, and argue that natural disasters occur because God hates gay people.

Pastor Warren might not utter the same, but he and his congregants belong to the same cesspool — a snake pit of the most racist vipers in America, who have and continue to use Religion (Christianity) to persecute others who do not think like them.

The entire Republican establishment is permitted actively to lavish them with praise and court their support without the slightest backlash or controversy.

To me, Religion is a disease, an affliction that is the catalyst of 90% of the world’s problems.

Comedian Bill Maher says: “Religion as brain disease,” “Christians have neurological disorder,” ……”I think religion is a neurological disorder…. When you were a kid and they were telling you whatever you believe in religion, do you think if they had switched the fairy tales that they read to you in bed with the Bible, you would know the difference? Do you think if it was the fairy tale about a man who lived inside of a whale and it was religion that Jack built a beanstalk today, you would know the difference? Why do you believe in one fairy tale and not the other? Just because adults told you it was true and they scared you into believing it, at pain of death, at pain of burning in hell.

My friend at afriqueonline.com says: God doesn’t exist. He never did . . . he never will. Wake up . . . grow up . . . and get over it! Religion is a fairy tale for adults, a scam run by priests, ministers, rabbis, nuns, witch doctors, bishops and popes so that suckers will pay for their big houses, fine clothes and BMW’s. As scary as it might sound, you alone are responsible for what happens in your life, not some imaginary spook living in a paradise in the sky . . . not some evil goblin living underground in a fiery pit . . . You!….[read more]

I agree with both, and it pains me to admit that my own dear mother is hooked to Religion like a junkie on crack-cocaine.

I rejected Religion (All Religion) at the age of five. At first my mom could drag me to church by force, but when I got bigger later in my teen years and she got older, the best she could do was scream at me (poor mama).

But don’t get me wrong — she is the best human being on earth and so are many other evangelicals — those who are not bent in shoving religion down my throat.

My early rejection of religion has not prevented me from knowing what’s right and what’s wrong — several decades later.

Now, back to ReTHUGlican McCain.

The New York Times and so many others reported that John McCain was not sitting in what Pastor Rick Warren referred to as “the cone of silence” while Barack Obama was questioned during Saturday night’s Saddleback Civil Forum on the Presidency.

McCain staffers told journalists that the Republican candidate was in a motorcade on his way to the church when Obama was on stage, but heard none of the questions.

Several times the pastor allowed McCain to “Stump” as if in a town-hall meeting, a luxury that was not accorded Mr. Obama.

After this charade, as usual, blood-sucking right-wing snakes(pundits) rushed out to toast McCain’s victory over Obama.

Rick Warren is just another lying and conniving “give GOD 10% of your wealth” pastor. I bet you he discussed every question with McCain before conducting the forum.

That had to be the case — judging from how relaxed the bumbling McCain was on Saturday.

This was a setup!

God’s Profits: Faith, Fraud, and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters

Book Description - Keenly observed and meticulously reported, “God’s Profits” examines the unholy alliance between a new breed of corrupt televangelists and the Republican Party, which is eagerly courting “values voters” in the nation’s largest megachurches.

Author Sarah Posner exposes the activities of Kenneth Copeland, John Hagee, Rod Parsley, T.D. Jakes, and other politically connected, skillfully marketed, and increasingly influential religious leaders. Preaching the “prosperity gospel.” The notion that faith and tithing alone can ensure financial security.

Both in their churches and over the airwaves, these charismatic leaders scam the gullible even as they enjoy unprecedented access to top Bush Administration officials.

Admired by Republican strategists for their antigovernment ideology and authoritarian leadership styles, these televangelists work together to maximize profits; protect themselves legally; influence elections, judicial nominations, and promote their pro-war, apocalyptic ideas.

Barack Obama And Hillary Clinton: Stop Talking About God

Tags: , , ,

All religions, without exception, require that its disciples disregard common sense and the law of physics, and swallow myths and superstitions. Jesus Christ walking on water, Moses parting the Red Sea, or the Prophet Mohammad ascending to heaven: It’s all an assault on reason and intelligence.

When I hear a political candidate describe the tenets of his faith, I find it as awkward as a co-worker describing his latest sexual conquest. Religious talk is for the church, and sex talk is for the bedroom.

In the 2008 presidential campaign most of the leading candidates, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, have gone into too much detail describing their religious faith.

Hillary Clinton’s surrogates have hinted that Barack Obama is a Muslim — he’s been forced to go to great lengths to identify himself as a Christian.

Obama was quoted in “Christianity Today”:

“I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful. I didn’t ‘fall out in church’ as they say, but there was a very strong awakening in me of the importance of these issues in my life. I didn’t want to walk alone on this journey. Accepting Jesus Christ in my life has been a powerful guide for my conduct and my values and my ideals.”

My response: As the kids say, “TMI” (Too Much Information)

Hillary Clinton in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network:

“Hillary Clinton: I believe in the father, son, and Holy Spirit, and I have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit on many occasions in my years on this earth.
CBN Reporter: Can I ask you theologically, do you believe that the resurrection of Jesus actually happened, that it actually historically did happen?

Hillary: Yes, I do.”

My response: TMI

Anything a presidential candidate says is open to analysis and criticism; if a politician doesn’t want his faith ridiculed he should keep it between himself and his God.

I don’t care if Hillary believes in the Holy Ghost or Casper the Friendly Ghost; I want to know about her politics and not her religion. If Hillary has felt the presence of the Holy Ghost, it’s because he’s been smiting her for her unholy attacks on Barack Obama.

I intend no disrespect to Jesus, but enough about him and the Holy Ghost. Let’s get the debate back on track and discuss NAFTA, health care, immigration and the Iraq war.
