Last week in this space I posed a challenge to the United States of America: Will it realise its potential of becoming humankind’s post-racial garden of Eden, completing the odyssey from Africa as the first Garden of Eden? في الاسبوع الماضي في هذا الفضاء يشكل تحديا لي الى الولايات المتحدة الامريكية : هل من تحقيق امكاناتها البشريه اصبحت في مرحلة ما بعد العنصريه جنة عدن ، واكمال الرحله الطويلة من افريقيا بوصفها أول جنة عدن؟ Or will the country waste that opportunity through bigotry, prejudice, and conflict? ام أن البلد النفايات تلك الفرصة من خلال التعصب والتحيز ، والصراع؟

This week we raise the question: What are the migrations that initiated the linkage between the first Garden of Eden and the second Garden of Eden? هذا الاسبوع ونحن نثير السؤال التالي : ما هي الهجرات التي شرعت في الربط بين جنة عدن الاولى والثانية جنة عدن؟ The garden of birth was Africa; the garden of potential post-raciality is the United States. حديقة الولادة أفريقيا ؛ حديقة المحتملة في مرحلة ما بعد raciality هو الولايات المتحدة. Will the human race need the Edenisation of America towards the post-racial age? سوف الجنس البشري في حاجة الى edenisation الامريكية تجاه العنصري في فترة ما بعد العصر؟

The story of Adam and Eve occurs in three of the great world religions – Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Only two of the three Abrahamic religions have featured prominently in the belief systems of the African peoples – Christianity and Islam. قصة آدم وحواء في ثلاث من اكبر الاديان في العالم -- اليهودية والمسيحيه والاسلام. اثنان فقط من الديانات الابراهيميه الثلاث مكانة بارزة في النظم العقاءديه للشعوب الافريقيه -- والمسيحيه والاسلام. Christianity and Islam have cast a shadow on the migrations of African peoples from the continent of the First Eden to the shores of the Second. المسيحيه والاسلام قد القى بظلاله على هجرات الشعوب الافريقيه من القارة الاولى من عدن الى شواطئ الثانية.

Central to the transfer of the African peoples from Africa to America was of course the role of Europe. If Africa invented the human race, Europe perfected racism. Europeans then inaugurated the most extensive trade in slaves ever attempted in human history. الوسطى لنقل للشعوب الافريقيه من افريقيا الى امريكا وبطبيعة الحال فان دور اوروبا. وإذا كانت افريقيا اخترع الجنس البشري ، واوروبا العنصريه والكمال. الاوروبيين ثم افتتح اوسع للتجارة الرقيق في محاولة من اي وقت مضى في تاريخ البشريه. Both European racism and European slave trade helped to set the stage for creating a multi-racial ‘New World.’ The final Eden was slowly in the making. كل من اوروبا والعنصريه وتجارة الرقيق الأوروبية ساعدت على تمهيد السبيل لخلق متعددة الاعراق 'العالم الجديد'. النهائية عدن ببطء في طور التكوين.

It is common knowledge that one of the ways by which Europeans legitimised the slave trade was by portraying Africans as heathens and cannibals. ومن المعروف ان واحدا من السبل التي الاوروبيين legitimised تجارة الرقيق وكان تصوير الافارقه مشركين وأكلة لحوم البشر. What is not often realised is that African resistance to European enslavement was in turn partly inspired by African fears that those white-skinned people were the ones who were cannibals. ما هو في كثير من الاحيان لا يدرك ان المقاومة لالافريقيه الاوروبية الاستعباد كان بدوره جزئيا من وحي الافريقيه مخاوف من ان تلك البشره البيضاء هم اشخاص كانوا من اكلة لحوم البشر.

As a Dutch contemporary Willem Bosman summed it up, “Sometimes we deal with slaves from deep in the interior, who convince each other that the reason why we buy and transport them is to fatten them and sell them again for an appetising meal.” الهولنديه المعاصرة بوصفها وليم bosman ولخصها ، "اننا في بعض الاحيان من التعامل مع الرقيق العميق في المناطق الداخلية ، من اقناع بعضهم البعض الى ان السبب وراء شراء ونحن ونقلها الى سمن وبيعها لهم مرة اخرى لتناول وجبة appetising".

What was happening was the forceful transfer of citizens of the world’s first Garden of Eden (Africa) to the shores of what may well turn out to be the world’s final Garden of Eden- the USA. ما يحدث هو استخدام القوة لنقل المواطنين من العالم الاول للجنة عدن (افريقيا) الى شواطئ ما يمكن أن تتحول إلى فى العالم النهائي جنة عدن - الولايات المتحدة الامريكية. That part of the population of the United States that was of African descent was historically destined to play decisive roles in the evolution of the second Eden towards its historic destiny. ان جزءا من سكان الولايات المتحدة الذي كان من اصل افريقي من الناحية التاريخية كانت متجهه الى لعب أدوار حاسمة في تطور الثانية عدن التاريخية نحو مصير.

The anti-slavery spirit of resistance among Africans was inspired by many factors, including love for freedom and a determination to remain on the soil of their ancestors. مكافحة الرق روح المقاومة بين الافارقه بوحي من عوامل كثيرة ، بما فيها من أجل الحرية والحب والإصرار على البقاء على ارض اجدادهم. But a perception of the white man as a cannibal, as the ultimate serpent who might eat up the African, aggravated African anxieties. ولكن تصور الرجل الابيض بوصفه اكل للحم البشر ، كما في نهاية المطاف من الثعبان قد تلتهم الافريقيه ، وتفاقم الهموم الافريقيه.

In 1752 one European captain in the harbour of Paramaribo, Suriname, was worried about whether his enslaved Africans on his ship Prins Willem V would jump overboard because “they feared they would be eaten” on arrival at their destination. في 1752 الكابتن اوروبيه واحدة في الميناء من باراماريبو ، سورينام ، واعرب عن قلقه ازاء ما اذا كان له استرقاق الافارقه لصاحب السفينة وليم Prins الخامس لن اذهب خارج السفينة لانها "تخشى انها ستكون اكل" عند وصول البضاعه الى وجهتها.

And an 18th century European handbook for slave traders urged the slavers to “assure the slaves, after they have been purchased, that they should not be afraid- that white people were not cannibals…” In our terms, the serpent was historically deadly, but was not a man-eater in the literal sense. والدليل القرن الثامن عشر الأوروبي لتجار الرقيق وحثت النخاسون الى "اعطاء العبيد ، بعد ان يكونوا قد تم شراؤها ، وانه ينبغي ان لا نخشى - ان الناس لا الأبيض أكلة لحوم البشر…" في الأحكام ، والثعبان القاتل كان من الناحية التاريخية ، ولكن ليست من صنع الانسان في الأكل بالمعنى الحرفي.

Back in Africa, indigenous rulers differed in their attitude to the slave trade. العودة في افريقيا ، من السكان الاصليين الحكام تختلف في موقفها من تجارة الرقيق. John Thornton reminds us that Queen Nzinga Nbande of Matamba in Angola tried to mobilise and coordinate opposition to the Portuguese slave traders in the 1630s and 1640s. جون ثورنتن يذكرنا بأن الملكه nzinga nbande من matamba في انغولا وحاول تعبئة وتنسيق المعارضة البرتغاليه الى تجار الرقيق في 1630s و1640s. But the Portuguese fought back and unfortunately got African allies in opposition to Queen Nzinga. ولكن قاتل البرتغاليه الى الوراء والافريقيه ومما يؤسف له ان حصل على حلفائها في المعارضة الى الملكه nzinga.

In the 18th century, Tomba, the leader of the Baga on the Guinean Coast, also tried to stop the slave trade but was opposed by resident Europeans, Mulattoes and African collaborators. في القرن الثامن عشر ، tomba ، زعيما للbaga الغينيه على الساحل ، كما حاولت ان توقف تجارة الرقيق ولكنه لقي معارضة من الاوروبيين المقيمين ، الخلاسيون الافريقيه والمتعاونين معها.

Agaji Trudo was one of the greatest kings of Dahomey. Agaji trudo هو واحد من اعظم ملوك داهومي. He was hostile to the slave trade, and invaded coastal Aja kingdoms partly in a bid to stop the trade. وقال انه معاد للتجارة الرقيق ، وغزت الممالك الساحليه aja جزئيا في محاولة لوقف هذه التجارة. His successes were short lived. Racist Europe persevered. وكانت له نجاحات قصيرة الاجل. ثابر اوروبا العنصريه.

Our essay here poses the issue of whether there is a secular historical and collective version of the biblical story of Genesis. مقال لدينا هنا يطرح مسألة ما اذا كانت هناك علمانيه الجماعية والتاريخية ونسخة من الكتاب المقدس قصة التكوين. Should we look at Africa as the first Garden of Eden – the original habitat of the human species, fallible, mortal and therefore profoundly human? وينبغي ان ننظر الى افريقيا بوصفها أول جنة عدن -- أعمال الموئل الاصلي للجنس البشري ، غير معصوم ، ولذلك الموت وانسانية عميقة؟ Should we look at the United States as potentially the second Eden, the future vanguard of a post-racial world? وينبغي ان ننظر في الولايات المتحدة إنها يمكن أن الثانية عدن ، ومستقبل طليعه ما بعد العنصري العالم؟

In 1978 William Julius Wilson alerted us about The Declining Relevance of Race. في عام 1978 ويليام جوليوس ويلسون نبهنا عن تراجع أهمية العرق. Prof Wilson might have been prophetic rather than descriptive. الاستاذ ويلسون قد يكون تم النبويه بدلا من وصفي.

America as the second Garden of Eden must first get its racial house in order. Between now and the end of the 21st century, America has to learn how to cope with race and ethnicity, with an increasingly aging population, and with the gender gaps of privilege in its population. امريكا الثانية جنة عدن يجب أولا أن أحصل على اعماله العنصري وترتيب البيت من الداخل. من الان وحتى نهاية القرن الحادي والعشرين ، واعتماد واشنطن لمعرفة كيفية التعامل مع العرق والاثنيه ، ويزداد مع شيخوخه السكان ، مع والفجوات بين الجنسين من امتياز في عدد سكانها.

America must learn how to accommodate its impatient youth, how to re-define its moral values, and how to become the final burying ground of sectarian hatreds and racial strife on the world scene. على أميركا أن تتعلم كيف مسايره للشباب بفارغ الصبر ، وكيفية اعادة تحديد القيم الاخلاقيه ، وكيف تصبح النهائي من الأرض دفن الاحقاد الطاءفيه والعرقيه والصراع على الساحة العالمية.

Here is the Tale of Two Edens – Africa where the human species began, and America where the human species stands a chance of attaining its optimum post-racial fulfillment, guided by African Americans as sons and daughters of the first Eden. وهنا حكايه اثنين Edens -- افريقيا ، حيث بدآ الجنس البشري ، وأميركا ، حيث الجنس البشري يقف فرصة لتحقيق أمثل ما بعد العنصريه وفاء ، اذ تسترشد الامريكيين من اصل افريقى كما أبناء وبنات عدن الاولى.

That Africa was the first Garden of Eden is a fact of history and paleontology. إن افريقيا هي جنة عدن الاولى هي حقيقة من حقائق التاريخ وعلم الاحاثه. There was light in the Dark Continent before there was light anywhere else. وكان هناك ضوء في الظلام القارة قبل ان تكون هناك ضوء في اي مكان آخر. That America is the second Garden of Eden is still a matter of hope and aspiration. ان اميركا هي الثانية جنة عدن لا تزال مسألة من الأمل والطموح. Let there be divine light on America too. ويجب الا يكون هناك ضوء الالهيه على امريكا ايضا.

Thus is it written: There was made the first man, the African living soul. وهكذا هو مكتوب : كان هناك تقدم اول رجل الافريقي ، من الذين يعيشون الروح.

Then, the last ideal, the American life-giving post-racial spirit. بعد ذلك ، وكان آخر المثل الاعلى ، والجمعية الامريكية الواهبه للحياة في مرحلة ما بعد العنصريه الروح.

Millennia after Adam there arose an Obama. بعد آلاف السنين آدم نشأت هناك وجود اوباما. It is now conceivable, nay credible, that our great grandchildren, of all ethnicities and all faiths, of all colours and all national origins, may witness such a miracle of a post-racial dawn before the end of this century. ومن الآن يمكن تصوره ، كلا موثوق بها ، ان اهتمامنا الكبير احفادنا ، من جميع الاعراق وجميع الاديان ، من جميع الالوان وجميع الاصول القوميه ، قد تشهد مثل هذه المعجزه من بعد الفجر العنصري قبل نهاية هذا القرن.
